Thanks for the scoring assistance...

...I appreciate the better eyes looking at my targets!

I love seeing everyone's targets. Please post more pics!

Glad to see you're doing the matches again, photo_guy! :)

Beetle and I went out and shot a couple of entries each. Here are our scores:

BamBam-31
Ruger 22/45 w/ UltraDot
50 ft.
90 pts. (Four 7's)

I was aiming for the 10, like Ankeny, and missed low, hitting the 7 instead. Then tried for the 8 to get a straight flush, but hit the grey area between the 8 and A instead. Doh! Okay, all 7's then....

BamBam-31
Sig 220 ST
50 ft.
60 pts. (Pair of A's)

Not my day. This guns shoots high and left (sight was slightly off), so I had to guesstimate where to shoot. First shot, aimed at the J, hit the A. Second shot, aimed at the 10 in hopes of hitting the K, hit above the A. Great. Okay, aimed at the J again in hopes of hitting the A, missed high. Tried again, hit the A. Last shot, I aimed at the 7 (Doh!) thinking it was the J again (it gets a bit blurry at 50 ft.), hit the J. Aaargh! Should have been three A's.

Beetle Bailey
Scoped Lee-Enfield No. 4 Mk. I
25 yds.
34 pts. (J, 9, 8, 7, miss)

Beetle Bailey
CZ 452 w/ irons
25 yds.
80 pts. (K, K, Q, 10, 6)

We were both not satisfied with our results, so we'll prolly try the match again next week. This is a good one!

Well "Dag Nabbit"........................due to a change in work schedule, I won't get back to the range before the end of the month - So I won't get to do any rifle shooting. :( So I'll just have to post what I have shot.

Air Rifle (no scope)
Daisy 853
Royal Flush - 100pts
A-K-Q-J-10

Stock Pistol
4" Ruger Security Six .357Mag
Straight Flush - 100pts
4-5-6-7-8

Stock Pistol
1858 Remington Cap & Ball Revolver replica .44cal
4 Kings, 1 miss - 90pts

Stock Pistol
SA 1911-A1 Mil-Spec .45ACP
3 Kings, 1 Jack, 1 miss - 70pts

I gave it another try.

Scoped rifle (2nd try, worse than the first)
Name: griz
Firearm/Caliber TC Contender, 17 HMR
Distance 25 yards
Hand/Score Flush, K,Q,J,J,10

Stock Rifle, iron sights
Name: griz
Firearm/Caliber Marlin model 39, Winchester 22 LR
Distance 25 yards
Hand/Score A,K,10,10, miss so a pair of 10's is all.

I knew the iron sights would be tough. With my eyes all I could see were the club symbols, which looked like dots. In hind sight it would have been safer to aim for the middle and taken the flush. Oh well. That's it for me this month. I was lucky to squeeze in a couple targets when the wind died down and it wasn't raining. Good luck to the last minute shooters.

Photo Guy - I, for one, hope you have seen enough responses to this match to want to continue posting them in the future. This was fun!

I appreciate you for hosting the match.

Merry Christmas!

Almost had it, but pulled the last shot for the Jack low and right in the 7.

Oh well, just like real poker, sometimes ya just gotta go for it. Might give it a try with real pistols tommorrow at the range.

It warmed up to 43 degrees today, so I got to shoot again. I'm blaming the score on the wind.

Robert J. McElwain
Firearm/Caliber: .22LR Remington Model 550-1 Rifle, with Tasco sight.
Distance: 25 yds
Hand/Score:a pair, 73 pts

Robert,

I'm glad you we able to get out an shoot the match. It has been pretty cold down here in TX as well.

Please take another look at the scoring rules and your target. If you have "a pair" it is 60 points. You can't add in the other cards to your total.

From the rules:
Unless they are all unmatched, extra cards do not count (i.e. - you can't get 4 of a kind and an Ace for 101 points).

NoBite - Thanks. You wouldn't want to to make a call on future matches before all the votes are in- would you? I know there are a few more entries out there! I am willing to do more matches but I need everyone to show their support.

BTW - It looks like the Airgun class is a pretty popular choice during the cold winter months. I guess we should keep it if the matches continue. :D

Oh, I understand. Come on, y'all. If you've been thinking about joining in, do it now! This is the last week. We need your support. :)

Okay, I took the liberty of enlarging the target because the minimum distance allowed at my range is 50 ft. Since it's 1.67 times farther, I enlarged the target 1.41 times (used the 141% setting on my copier). You can see the size of the cards in the pic of the 8.5"x11" photocopy. Didn't bring my 22/45 w/ Ultradot this time, prolly could have done well with the enlarged target.

BamBam-31
Springfield Loaded .45 (Stock Pistol)
50 ft.
Score: 90 pts. (Four A's)

First shot aimed for the A, hit the A. Second shot aimed for the K, hit where the A/J/K meet. Third shot aimed for the Q, missed high. Subsequent shots were all at the A.

BamBam-31
HK P7M8 9mm (Stock Pistol)
50 ft.
Score: 100 (Royal Flush)

Hit every card I aimed for, surprisingly.

Here's the pic:

Oops!! You're right. So not only poor shooting, but senility to boot. :banghead:

Here's some scores from ACP230 and I.

Name: Little Loudmouth
Class: Air Rifle
Gun/Caliber: Izhmash ZK-60 Russian air rifle, .177 caliber
Hand/Score: 3 of a kind=70 points.

Name: ACP230
Class: Air Rifle
Gun/Caliber: Same as above
Hand/Score: Assorted cards: King, Queen, 10, 9=39 points.

Little Loudmouth forgot to mention that we shot at 28 feet.
It's the longest distance we can squeeze out of the house without a remodeling job. I don't think the shorter distance was a great advantage as you can see from checking our scores.

The air rifle we used is a short Russian job. It's got a side cocking mechanism, good peep sights, and an adjustable trigger. Although it's short it's well balanced and holds on the target well in offhand. It's more accurate that we are, although we have done some better shooting with it.
We hadn't shot it for months. In the summer cartridge guns get most of the range time.

I finally did it. The temp crept up to a balmy 29 today, so I gave this one a try.

Your THR ID/NAME Mal H
Firearm/Caliber Scoped Pistol - Ruger MK-512
Distance 10 yd
Hand/Score 3 of a kind = 70

My first shot was aimed at the Ace - missed everything! Ok, there goes the straight flush. Let's try for a 4 of a kind - missed and got the King. No problem, 4 Kings would be the same score - missed and got the Ace! 2 more shots right of the King went where they were supposed to.

(Note to self: be sure to sight in the damn pistol before shooting a match target if you change ammo type.)

Your THR ID/NAME Mal H
Firearm/Caliber Stock Rifle - Marlin 39A
Distance 25 yd
Hand/Score Straight Flush = 100

I love this rifle! It's just about as accurate with iron sights as any other rifle is with a scope.

Your THR ID/NAME Mal H
Firearm/Caliber Scoped Rifle - Ruger 10/22T
Distance 25 yd
Hand/Score Straight Flush = 100

Fairly easy with this one. 24X scope. Although I almost blew it since I kept aiming at the center of the card for the Jack and 10 - could easily have dropped just a smidge and ruined the hand.

HAPPY NEW YEAR TO ALL!

NOV/DEC Match Scores

It looks like the THR members came through and the matches will continue! There were about 15 particapants in this match. There were also about 1000 views of the match thread which makes it one of the most viewed in the competition shooting category. That tells me there is enough interest to keep the matches going. Thanks to all for your efforts. There is a new match for January posted.

This match had many entries that achieved the top score possible. Congratualtions to: Ankeny, NoBite, Mark whiz, BamBam-31, Griz, and Mal H for getting the "straight flushes" and top scores in their respective categories. {Let me know if I missed anyone or put you in the wrong category.}

I hope you all enjoyed the match! Happy New Year to all!

Opps, I forgot to note that my first rifle score was with a scoped Mini 14, so my 100 point score in stock rifle should be in the scoped rifle catagory. (the other scoped rifle score is correct) Sorry, my bad. And Mal's straight flush was ace high, so he won.

Thanks for running these matches, it's fun shooting them. :)

Thanks Griz. I made the corrections.

If we use this target in a future match I was considering changing the scoring to account for the different sizes of the cards. i.e. a royal flush would count for more than a straight flush that uses the cards in the front.
As written this time there no difference for scoring purposes.

Would anyone like to see this target again? I like it because it is "politically correct", challenging, and requires some thinking.

For me that target is great. I was thinking of a match using it at longer range, far enough that even with a scoped rifle a straight flush would be almost impposible on purpose. But that might take it to the point of blind luck so maybe, maybe not. Anyway I'll keep shooting them.
