SLOW AND STEADY WINS THE RACE

For those who may not be familiar with the general rules of the matches please see the rules FAQ .

This months contest will measure your accuracy and consistency. You must be able to make hits on the target many times without missing. Once you miss on a target you are done. Your mission is to get the longest string of bullseyes as you can before you miss.

The targets are small (1†circles) so this will be an extreme challenge at long ranges. Don’t get cocky. Start out fairly close and work your way out to longer ranges if you can.

Scoring:
Scoring will be based on the number of hits before a miss and distance.

The ‘range’ (target distance) is YOUR CHOICE. However, I will use the range of all entries to normalize the scores. The longest successful ranges will get higher final placement in the rankings.

REMEMBER: You must shot the target in sequence and STOP when you have a miss. [If you do shot more targets after the miss only the hits prior to the miss count for the match score.]

The final score you report must include :
THR NAME
CLASS
# of shots(hits) before a miss
Target Distance (yards)

PISTOL STOCK CLASS - Standard pistols with barrels 6" or less
PISTOL IMPROVED - Pistols with significant improvements from out-of-the-box or pistols with barrels more than 6".
PISTOL SCOPED - Any scoped pistol
RIFLE STOCK CLASS - Standard rifles with iron sights
RIFLE SCOPED - Any scoped rifle
AIRGUN PISTOL- unscoped airgun
AIRGUN RIFLE - unscoped air rifle

3 entries per shooter in up to 3 classes allowed this month. (i.e. you can shoot up to 9 targets, three in each class; Hint:you may wish to try the target at three different distances, perhaps.)

The target can be found HERE

Awesome, this looks like a fun shoot. Very much like what I tend to shoot for fun.

Question: It's cold and blustery out right now, not good conditions for air pistol. My home indoor range is only 6 yards, can you normalise a non-standard distance like 6 yards? Or should I move in to 5? Hoping to shoot at least 1 of the 3 outside at 10.

DeuceTrinal,
Welcome to the match! Yes, I will be able to deal with non-standard distances for this match.

This months match (and the January match) are actually experiments. I am trying to come up with a way to accommodate shooters who a) don't have ranges that allow shooting at specified distances and/or b) don't have an indoor range and live up in the 'frozen North'.
It seems that any distance I specify causes a problem for someone. This months match should be very airgun friendly since it is likely that you will want to try some relatively close distances to get a decent run on the small targets.

I hope it works and people enjoy this type of match in the winter months. I'll get back to more standard type matches when the weather improves.

Enjoy!

I know the distance is the most important factor, but I went for consistency. I have two entries. When it warms up I might try it at 12 yards.

Can we shoot practice rounds using the target? Or can we only use the target when we're ready to start scoring? Thanks.

chickenfried, your question is actually answered in the FAQ:

Can I practice before shooting the match?

Unless otherwise specified in the monthly match directions, you may take some practice shots before shooting the match target. However, you should not use a copy of the match target for practice shots. This eliminates the temptation to pick the best score or get confused on which target was the ‘record’ target when you get back from the range.

Some monthly matches may specify that the match target be shot without practice, “cold and on demandâ€, etc. in order to simulate a hunting or other real world situation.

Ankeny - Ya know, every month I try to come up with an interesting match and write up what I think are complete rules. Then I post it and you guys always find the holes. I didn't consider that someone would use multiple targets for their string. I figured that 20 would be enough and people would get the 'max score' and then move out to a longer range for the next go.

52 rounds before a miss!! - I think I would have gotten bored and stopped long before that.

I guess this means that everyone should bring a lot of targets with them to the range!

I was at seven yards. The target you chose is the same size as the dot drills (Ron Avery) that I have been doing do several years. The target is well within the wobble zone of a lot of shooters, so all it takes is fire control. I don't think I can even hit it at 15 yards.

Photo Guy:

If you want to limit the shoot to 20 rounds that's cool with me. I'll try it a bit further out. Appears no one else has made it to the range so a rules clarification won'r hurt a thing. Probably better go with 20 rounds max or someone will get bored and shoot 100 straight at 5 yards and make scoring a real task.

Ankeny - good suggestion.

ALL: The match entries will end at a 20 round string if no misses. If you complete 20 without a miss you should put some more distance between yourself and the target and try again for your next entry. (ALthough 20 will be the max for each entry you may continue until you miss beyond this for amusement, if you are into one-hole-drills, or are really competative and just want to beat Ankeny.) :D

Bummer - As chickenfried has noted it looks like mytargets.com is down and I have no idea how long it will take to get back. And, I normally download a copy of the match target but did not do this months.

I seem to recall the target was 20 1" circles. Can someone who downloaded the target confirm this so people can make suitable substitute targets in the event mytargets never comes back?

Ouch!

Ankeny - I bow low to you with humble respect. ;)

Photo_guy - I've been to the range twice to shoot this match and do not have a single target to post yet! For me, this is nearly impossibly difficult.

My definition of accuracy is all shots grouping in a fist-sized group. I shoot for "combat accuracy," so the idea of one shot in a 1" circle repeatedly is proving to be quite interesting. I started at the 7.5-yard distance, the closest distance at our club's range. With two pistols, I failed to shoot consecutive bulls-eyes. After two boxes of ammo for each pistol, I quit for the day.

I can set up a few targets at home at even a closer distance, but I'm not so sure I will. May have to switch to a rifle to have any chance. Or, just get my butt out there and practice a WHOLE lot more!

No Bite - yes, this can be difficult. This is basicly a variation of a "one hole drill" that is often taught to improve basic site picture and trigger control skills. If 7.5 yards is the closest range you have available and it is causing problems you might consider an entry in the airgun class this month.

I haven't seen many entries posted this month so I'm guessing others are having trouble with this as well.

OK guys, I got to the range today and shot the match. I figured I'd post my pitiful performance so others might not feel so bad.

Started in upper left corner, left to right, then drop down one row and repeat.

Tough match!

Deadline extended & March Match posted.

Since I will be out of town for the next week I will extend the deadline for the February match until March 6th. This gives you two more weekends to give this one a try.

Plus, I have posted the March match which you can start on now.

air rifle open sights at 12 yards. 7 shots until a miss.

cant wait until warmer weather here.

As you can see I was playing with my SASS guns and squeesed this match in to the session. Being incredibly frugal I decided to shoot all three enties on one target. Ok, I really did worse than I thought I would. The rifle in particular should have been easy to hit with, but I got in a hurry. If I get chance this week I'll try the scoped rifle class too.

Little Loudmouth and I finally got around to shooting the February match with the air rifle this afternoon. The rifle is a Russian NZK-60 (or something, cyrillic letters are a riddle wrapped in an enigma to me). It is short and weighs about four and a half pounds but is well-balanced. It has peep sights. We shot from nine yards. That's all the range we can get without remodeling the basement.

LL missed his first target.

I was only a little better. I hit the first one and missed the second.

Lighting was a problem on this match. We have a shop light above our cardboard box backstop, but for small targets like this it looks like we need some lights on the floor illuminating the target from below too.
