Now at a crisis

If you can remove the barrel, then heat the nipple with a propane torch, making sure to get most of the heat on the cone of the nipple, you can make a sheet metal deflector to help concentrate the heat then letting it cool to the touch, do that about 3-4 times, then use your new tool coming from Dixie.

Don't try the new wrench with out the heating and penetrating oil. You can get a small pouch of anti-seize from Auto Zone it's enough to last years I think it's about a buck.

Have you tried cutting a potato in half and using that to twist off the nipple?

Oh sorry, that's lightbulbs!!

Just trying to interject some levity into this... sticky... situation!! :D

That's a most interesting chart.....Ed's Red has a lot going for it.

Ed's Red bore solvent-ATF / mineral spirits / kerosene / acetone (all 1 to 1)
Ed's Red general purpose gun oil - ATF / kerosene (1 to 1 )
Ed's Red penetrating oil - ATF / acetone (1 to 1 )

Seems like Ed Harris saw a lot of potential in ATF. I mixed up a batch of bore cleaner, after reading this test about the penetrating oil...I'm going to mix up some of it and the gun oil also. I'm always soaking rusty parts and tools in penetrating oil and it's not cheap.....I've got plenty of ATF, acetome , and kerosene on hand.

Thanks so much for posting it !
Gary

Got the nipple out!! Got a two flat sided wrench. It was brass and came out easily with right tool. No cross threading.

Great! Maybe next time you have a problem with the gun, you won't have to post on a half dozen different forums making several threads on each website. :)

Just bustin' yer chops, glad you got that stubborn nip out.

Haha, so true. I wasn't sure how many people check the forums. But it provided a wealth of information. I get a great education form you you all! Thanks again.

About the Vice Grip suggestions...

This looks to be brass. If so, then clamping Vice Grips on it may make things a lot worse. You could very easily deform the brass nipple, causing extraction to be totally impossible without drilling/tapping. Or you could easily crush/snap the nipple off, with drilling/tapping again being the only resort left.

A penetrating fluid with 4v50 Gary's socket suggestion is the way to go.

David, invest in some Birchwood Casey choke tube lube. Use it after cleaning as an anti-sieze on the nipple threads. Thank me later!! :D

He used a Chapman (Screwdriver) type ratchet to remove it. It's illustrated at TFL.

100% impossible to tell from a picture. You need to use thread gauges or known size screws to compare it to and find the size from that.

The good news is that it's a fairly coarse thread so it's likely a standard size... unless it's a true antique in which case all bets are off since some makers before there were standards tended to be rather free with thread sizes. And standards of any sort didn't come along until the later part of the 19th century and didn't see full use until WW1.

You can send in any nipple to Dixie Gun Works or Track of the Wolf and they'll match it.
Ask them first in case I'm wrong on this.

I tried a 5/16 x 20 nipple. It didn't work. Here is the pic of my gun's nipple on left and the 5/16 x 20 on right. I am thinking either a 5/16 x 18 or 8-1.25 mm. Any suggestions?
