Now that it's getting colder in the North does that change the way you CCW?

I discovered last night that I need to be a lot more careful of WHERE I'm carrying, rather than WHAT I'm carrying. In warm weather, I carry a Kimber Ultra Carry IWB behind my right hip. Other times I carry a USB Compact in a modified bellyband. Last night and this morning, I took some pretty good slips on the ice. Landed right where I would have been carrying the Kimber. My back is in a pretty good amount of pain right now, but I would hate to think what it would be like if I had been carrying IWB, or (God forbid) small-of-back......

yup, the HK USP comes out for the winter. Easier to manipulate the controls with gloves on.

It is better from a tactical point of view to carry the same gun the same way every time. Your training should be along the same lines as well.
Muscle memory, and less opportunity for error if these guide lines are met.

That being said my primary carry is done with an IWB. Didnt think I would get used to it but when you wear it awhile you find the spot on your hip that it just fits right. The only other carry I use is a fanny pack for a quick grab and go. I train that way as well.

Personally I do not like the idea of a gun just flopping around in a coat pocket with out some kind of holster or sheath on it. Dont like the idea of an accidental fire it might blow my brains out if you know what I mean.:(

I'll carry the 45 more in the Winter but I don't completely stop using the 9mm. Depends on the activity. Every now and then I'll pack the old 44Mag (picture). That's a lot of bullet, but hey, you never know when you might have to stop a runaway salt truck :neener:

I don't vary my carry method.

I don't vary carry location (3:30 strong-side), but I do vary method and gun. I've got my smaller "summer guns," which are corrosion-resistant (stainless, NP3 or Ilaflon) for the obvious reasons. Then I've got the "winter guns" that are blued and I carry OWB.

I'm a Scandanavian living in Georgia, so I don't need gloves in winter, but it's nice to wear heavier clothing and carry the CZ75B.

I still carry in my usual mode, but I try to be more careful to avoid situations where I would need to leave my weapon in my car. Sliding a frigid hunk of steel into my smartcarry holster once was enough, thank you!

Drizzt - as you discovered, there's a reason that SOB carry isn't as popular as it used to be. There have been people that have suffered spine (and spinal cord) injuries when they went down on a SOB rig. I never thought it was worth it myself but just my opinion.

This thread has made me think - maybe I'll start carying my Custom 1917 snubby again. Six .45's are a convincing argument even against a target with a parka!

Be safe,
Mike
