Now that we're in 'Code Orange'...

Should I be doing something....?
Yeah - Keep an even closer eye on your government. War has been the excuse for nearly every serious government abridgement of human rights. In fact, I'd be much more wary of the government than terrorists. Any terrorist attack will be blindingly obvious (that's the point of terrorism) - but threats from the government may well be hidden in doubletalk, specious promises, and/or obscure legislation. Stay alert!

Lone_Gunman ...

"Buried your hard drive in the backyard"? You didn't actually do that ... Did you? That doesn't make any sense ... (unless of course it was one of those 'evil' over capacity hard drives).

Which reminds me, can anyone tell me if it is illegal to install a 'post-ban' 30 gig hard drive on a 'pre ban' Commodore 64? Thanks ...

I really want to start carrying CCW to work. Unfortunately "work" is downtown San Francisco. Not going to be Ground Zero though, the extremists won't target their only supporters in the country, will they? They will never attack the bleeding heart liberals, right???

Anyway, I am not changing a thing. But if bombs start dropping on Iraq, I'm taking a personal day.

Gryphon- Awesome! I'll have to get one to use as a SHTF humidor. :D

I will be going to the store, church and checking the mail with my Benelli at low ready at all times. Camelbak will not fall below 60% capacity and I will cover and scan while my teammates refill it in case it does.

I believe that if one keeps one's eyes open and one's head out of his armpit, he will do well.

Of course, the shotgun should come out of the safe, and be placed beside the handgun on the nightstand

I started cleaning out under my bed for a place to hide when TSHTF.

There was 10,000 rounds of reload ammo under there I'd forgotten about, and some ancient manuscripts called "Penthouse Letters" that people used for reference in the olden days before Usenet.

I just left it all be. I'll hide out in the garage with the skunks.

Priceless! some of those comments really made me laugh. :D Does a loaded Mossberg 500 and the old trusty .38 special on the dresser next to the bed mean anything?

Firepower swap...

Good Evening All-

Home is already well-stocked with non-perishable food, water, ammunition, and medicines.

My bedside HD is usually a .40-caliber semi-automatic pistol, but I typically pull out the Vang Comp Remington 870 shotgun when we're in Code Orange.

I make no alterations to my work or personal schedules.

Tom Ridge (sitting in office, feeling left out): "Dang, it's been weeks since my face was on the tube. Hmmm... Wait!"

*Turns around in chair, throws dart at color wheel on wall*

Tom Ridge (at press conference later, cameras whirring away): "We are now at DefCon Orange, folks!"

Then again, maybe it doesn't happen that way. Plausible, though, ain't it?

I loaded my Mosin-Nagant up, and sleep with it now, in case of a midnight terroist invasion in rural southern NC. :p

My son made me a CD that includes a couple of Sir Winston Churchill's 1940 speeches. I listened to them, including one in which he refers to Hitler's "perverted science".

Sort of reminds me of Saddam's chem/bio warfare...and Winnie was as inspirational as he was then. I look forward to once again trying to live life in his "sunlit uplands" after the spectre of terrorism has paled.

All things considered, Code Orange really means absolutey nothing this time around. We are at Code Orange simply because of the time of year being close to some Muslim holidays, not because of any sort of known terrorist problems, threats on us here at home, or anything like that.

Given the current states of affairs that there may be trouble in Korea or that we may be going to war with Iraq again, that there is still trouble with Al Queda, then we all should have already made some basic preparations.

The chances of any of us being in a terrorist attack is still extremely small. Other types of threats on us as individuals, such as robbery, murder, rape, kidnapping, etc., are still very real problems that are more likely to happen to us.

If you have had to make some changes because of this recent announcement of Code Orange, then you are behind the curve.

Exactly right. Anyone on this board should have the situational awareness to stay constantly prepared for Cond. Orange.

I was thinking of geting some of those little mirror's that go on your glasses just incase someone is comeing up from behind me.

I'am not paranoid you just think I am;)

I heard about the change on a radio news report. Heard a clip of Hisonerable Mikey Bloomberg telling Noo Yawkers to not worry because he will protect them. Just go back to work (and pay those taxes) and Noo Yawk'll protect them.

I couldn't figure out a way to bitch-slap the radio so I yelled at it.

I went to the gunshow and purchased lead. Went overboard and bought some .45 ACP FMJ. They really are purddy. Whaddaya thimk? Thimk I'll get another thousand ft / sec because they are so purddy. That's it, I'll load purddy ammo in honor of defcon orange.

Someone give me a break. Why do I think I'm being patted on the head every time we get one of these scares? This crap is CYA for the federales. What they haven't figured out is if we get thumped again though a means the federales have refused to deal with realistically (oh, say border crossers or a hijacked FEDEX freighter) there ain't enough cover out there to save 'em.

I bought some more 00 Buck for my 870. It's not like it will spoil anytime soon. Having more than you need isn't a bad thing.

On Fox about an hour or so ago they reported that the Sec. Ridge has said that on a scale of 1-10 our chances of a major attack is 8.

It sounds like there is a decent chance of something big, or a coordinated set of big attacks, soon. Nuclear, dirty bomb, chemical, biological, attack on infrastructure (electricity substations, electricity generation, nuclear plants, major bridges, major dams, etc.) are all possibilities.

Be ready. We should be prepared for something all the time anyway. The chances of a riot, earthquake, hurricane, tornado, blizzard, etc. are always there. Our preparations for one possibility where services are temporarily knocked out will help us for the other possibilities too.

Minimum preparations:

-Food. Canned foods that need little or no preparation are good. Get stuff you are willing to eat day to day too since you need to rotate your stocks every few months or so.

-Water. Drink from those 1liter bottles for a few days and see how many you drink to get an idea of how much you need to put aside to have a stash of water good for 2-3 weeks.

-Candles, lots of them. An old coffee can with sand in the bottom (with a candle in it this will provide some heat). Candles are also good for light too :). You'll also need a lot of waterproof matches and/or several cigarette lighters.

-A battery powered radio (shortwave is useful), battery powered lanterns and flashlights, tons of batteries.

-Extra seasonally appropriate clothing in a bag ready to go should you need to leave.

-Extra blankets.

-A good first aid kit.

-Don't forget you may need something to do and you may not be able to access your video games, TVs and computers. Card games, board games, jig saw puzzles, books, books of word games or word puzzles, etc. will be very helpful.

-I am being sure all my guns are clean and I have plenty of ammo for each of them. Yeah, I know I won't get a chance to shoot any terrorists, but you've seen what people can do if order breaks down for a while. I want to be ready if people start rioting, looting or worse.

If you live in a CCW state get a CCW gun, train and get a license. If you don't live in a CCW state think about whether you are willing to risk the potential legal risks. I would be very surprised if we didn't see the kind of suicide bombings and shootings that you see in Israel all the time. How many times do you hear about someone over there putting a stop to an attack with a personally owned and carried gun?

So you shouldn't be doing anything you shouldn't have already been doing.

Code Orange-Trip to DC

The Missus and I wandered into the District of Columbia to celebrate a special event and saw firsthand what Code Orange meant.

Surly guards in poorly fitting clothes with wooden dowels and Garrett metal scanners poking and prodding you in all the places you don't want to be poked and prodded. Lines going around the block in freezing weather to see the National Gallery of Art.

Lots of men on the rooftops around the White House and the White House, as well as Lafayette Park. Fewer diplomatic tagged cars running red lights and making you scurry out of the crosswalk to avoid being a Mercedes pancake.

The odd thing was, I did not see a single, solitary DC cop anywhere the entire day!

Making Sense of the Color Codes

I don't know about the rest of you, but I carefully watch what the terrorism color code is. I welcome visitors to my house according to the color of the day:

1) Low (Green)
Without looking through the peephole, open the unlocked door. Welcome guest in, leave door open in case anybody else wants to drop by, and get guest a cup of coffee and a brownie.

2) Guarded (Blue)
Unlock the door and admit guest only after looking through peephole first. Relock the door before getting guest a cup of coffee and a brownie.

3) Elevated (Yellow)
Approach the door only when the guest knows the secret password. Admit guest after they show their picture ID through the peephole. Make a new cup of coffee to ensure that nobody tried to poison the old stuff while you were out. Have your guest open the Tupperware that holds the brownies in case it is booby-trapped.

4) High (Orange)
All guests must call ahead and give their arrival time within 5 minutes. Guest gives secret password, and shows picture ID through peephole. Guest is then asked to de-frock while you look
through the peephole, ensuring that they are carrying no undeclared weapons. (The should be
carring a gun, I just want to know how many.) Donning a Kevlar vest, turn off alarm system (beer
cans tied to a string), and let guest in. Lock door, and tell guest to get their own coffee and
brownie, never turning your back to them. Kung-Fu master waits in the closet in case guest goes
berserk.

5) Severe (Red)
Set off claymores at the slightest sound outside the door. Grab bug-out-bag with guns-n-ammo
and climb out nearest window and head to nearest THR safe house. Hit apartment self-destruct button on the way out.
