there are 4 possible outcomes (ranked from worst to best):

criminal dies and you die
criminal doesn't die, and you die
criminal dies and you don't die
criminal doesn't die, and you don't die

1. criminal dies and you die
2. criminal doesn't die, and you die
3. criminal doesn't die, and you don't die
4. criminal dies and you don't die

There, fixed it for you.;)

I think that the rancor targeting this story on THR reflects intense discomfort with the choice made by the social worker.
I think it may be more of a reflection of tired the general THR poster is of hearing about being passive to attackers. We are are all obviously strong self defense advocates and we're assault day after day by stories where pizza guys defend themselves and lose their job. The media doesn't write to appluad them for defend themselves and protecting their lives. We read about the latest public shooting where the police were the only ones allowed to carry arms in that place yet they were executed first and the rest of the people there had to throw folding chairs to defend their lives. We see nothing in the media about the travesty of those people not being allowed to defend themselves. We read the latest front page story about a group of high school students let out of school by an administrator with an agenda talking whatever lines they're fed about common sense gun laws. Meanwhile gun owners assemble in number in the state capital and get no media coverage.

To most THR posters, this is more of the same. Be a good victim. Don't resist your mugger. In fact buy him lunch and you'll get to talk and have a good story to tell. Defending yourself with force is never acceptable, this is the behavior you should strive to emulate. What you see is nothing more than the anger and frustration of posters who are tired of more media puff pieces that encourage people to be victims.

LOL @ Bazooka Joe71. I was about to post _just_that_, hit the page 3 link, and saw you beat me to it.

Stories like this are centuries old. The turning point of Les Miserables is a very similar story.

Exactly--STORIES like old Vic Hugo's. Some are quite entertaining. What concerns me is presenting this nonsense as a valid choice when confronting a REAL criminal is likely to get good people killed.

Dr. King and Gandhi thought and acted more bravely than most would do and faced violence every day.

Again, don't confuse the POLITICAL TACTIC of non-violent demonstration with the foolishness of trying to brefriend your mugger. King and Gandhi didn't advocate giving your coat to criminals. They won a PR war by exposing the brutality of the state. There is no PR war to win with your mugger.

But because the social worker chose a peaceful alternative, 80% of the posts are sure its a lie. What is that about?

No, we're skeptical because it has the odor of a tall tale to it. The way the mugger acts, and talks, rings the big brown bell of bravo sierra

Soybomb has it.

Some are even older... Like when I posted the story a few days ago, and it got locked because it wasn't gun related.

I know this post isn't high road... I'm just bitter.

Haha

2 years later, and Hattie still runs when someone comes to the door.

I'd love to find the guy that killed the trust in my little pup-- and almost killed her.

There is nothing that makes me see red more than animal cruelty. I have to hope there is some sort of cosmic justice, karma, whatever in store for such cretins. Glad your dog is still with you.

Thank you my friend. You and I are kindred spirits on animal cruelty. I'm sure Hattie would give you a good licking. She can sense good hearted people.
