NPR news article on AWB today

This news story aired this Thursday morning on All Things Considered. It can be played with Real Audio or Windows media player. It is rare that the more liberal media outlets actually get anyone into their stories who know anything about firearms. This story still uses liberal connotations and loaded terms though so you can tell which side their bread gets buttered on.

I noticed one blatant factual error, "Automatic weapons may be against the law in the United States...."

Congress is weighing whether to renew a ban on certain assault-style weapons that is due to expire in September. Gun control advocates on Capitol Hill say renewal is essential, but both supporters and opponents of the ban agree that so far, it has failed to work as intended. NPR's Larry Abramson reports.

Dear Sir/Madam:

Your article of Thursday 3/11/4 contains one factual error.
Automatic weapons are not illegal in the United States, at least by
any federal law. They are heavily regulated by the National Firearms
Act of 1934. Any citizen can own and responsibly use fully automatic
firearms if they pass a stringent background check, register the
firearm, pay a tax, and if such weapons are not prohibited by
municipal laws.

I broach one point with you regarding this article. The second
amendment does not only guarantee hunters the right to hunting arms.
It simply states the broad right to keep and bear arms. There is no
discernable nuance regarding certain types of firearms or limitations
on any sub-set of law-abiding activity. Don't forget, the second
amendment was written immediately following our overthrow of British
rule and meant to empower United States citizens with the means to
protect our liberty, whether the threat be foreign or domestic.
Thomas Jefferson said, "From time to time, the tree of liberty must
be watered with the blood of tyrants and patriots," and "The price of
freedom is eternal vigilance." Second Amendment supporters do not
take this charge lightly.

Shhhh! I don't think it's in our best interests to tell people that the NFA regulates rather than bans full auto. Most gun banners live in states with laws against full auto, so they think it's banned everywhere. Most of them don't really understand or care about the difference between state and federal law. If they realize it's still legal in some states, that will be their next target. The best way to say it in a discussion is "Fully automatic weapons are regulated by the National Firearms Act of 1934 and the Assault Weapons Bill has nothing to do with fully automatic weapons."

Actually some of my bliss ninny friends think the AWB has been renewed. I'm not going to argue with them.
