A gun instructor accidently shot a student in the foot Saturday during an NRA class to receive certification to carry a concealed weapon, Orlando police said.

Robert Frauman Jr., 50, was taken to Florida Hospital after instructor Michael Phillips' firearm discharged about 11:45 a.m., police said.

Phillips, 32, could not be reached for comment. The accident happened at Summit Church, located in a former movie theater near the Fashion Square mall.

The bullet went through a table before it hit Frauman, said Kristy-Lee Lawley, the church's communications director. She said Frauman, a member of the church, was "recovering well" and the bullet didn't break any bones.

Frauman was one of three students in the class, which was not a church-sponsored event, Lawley said. She said the church offered an upstairs conference room for free after some church members requested to have the class there. Lawley said the church is empty on Saturdays and this was the first class of its kind there.

"We won't be having anything like that in our church in the future," Lawley said.

The church with 2,500 members is headed by Pastor Isaac Hunter, son of the Rev. Joel Hunter, senior pastor of the Longwood-based megachurch Northland, A Church Distributed. The churches are not affiliated.

The NRA has a rule against bringing ammunition into a class, said Tom Wagner, a NRA instructor in Orlando who was not involved in Saturday's shooting. He said the association has "no problem yanking a certification if the rules are being broken."

This was not the first time something's gone wrong during a gun demonstration in Orlando. In 2004, a special agent with the Drug Enforcement Administration shot himself in the thigh with a .40-caliber Glock pistol while talking to schoolchildren about gun safety.

Floridians love their stupid requirement that one pass a class prior to being able to exercise a right.

Hah, I know right where that place is.

These hot shot "instructors" feel they are above the rules and plainly, they aren't. That's not a dig at all instructors, you know who I'm talking about.

Uh, idiots like this drive my business up. He only had a class of three. Wow he's either just starting out or not marketing himself right. As an instructor the only loaded firearm in the classroom is the one in my pocket that does not come out for anything. Sure I get insulted stares from folks as I make them open their gun cases to safely make sure the gun is unloaded. Also make sure to have a 'safe direction to point it in when doing so.' If someone doesn't want to let me make sure their gun is unloaded I kick them out of the class after I give a polite warning, if they can't manage this then I don't to chance what other dangerous things they'll do.

I've had classes of fifteen, everyone's guns checked to make sure they are unloaded. I put them all(inside the box after checking to make sure unloaded) in one spot away from the people and then conduct the lecture. When it's time to shoot I grab the gun box, case, or bag of the student and they don't get to touch it till we are on the range. If you are an instructor and feel the need to demonstrate on a pistol, get a friggin' airsoft that looks similar. I've got a 1911 airsoft fake that cost me $15 back in February of last year and suits the necessary purposes.

Some things are just common sense. Oh I'm not an 'Orlando' instructor as I'm not in orange county, but right next door in seminole county. Something is wrong with these people in Orange county I swear.

Man, too much state bashing going on. The poor things are full of nice folk who just have the wrong mentality. :)

In our class the main man had one of those fancy orange glocks,
We had to give up our firarms to the instructor as well. I for one was glad to see that. We all got to play with the orange glock. I felt left out as I was the only one who didn't have a glock.:what: But the instuctor told me that next time he would have a orange sig.

Priceless!

The "instructor" had a loaded gun in the classroom, a clear violation of the NRA's policy of "no live ammunition in the class." Unfortunately some people become NRA instructors because they think they can make up the rules to fit themselves. The web is full of "NRA instructors" advertizing "concealed carry" classes even though the NRA does not offer this kind of class. This guy needs to have his credentials revoked!

Lol, man I kept thinking about what an idiot that instructor was, and when I saw birdshot8's comment, I lost it...I almost peed myself laughing.

too many "NRA certified instructors" out there with no real world knowledge or discipline. seen it many times, guys wearing the gear on the outside over nothing inside. most i've met do not impress me at all, except with their ignorance and self inflated ego.

guys wearing the gear on the outside over nothing inside

I had to read that three times... At first, I thought you were describing a guy wearing a Kevlar vest and a holster belt, with no clothes underneath.

Time to go outside and take a break...:D

This bears repeating..

My first 1st, No. 1 exposure to firearms came during USN bootcamp firearms training. We had just settled into our desks, when the grisled PO1 held up a 1911 and pulled the mag out. He asked and we agreed it was unloaded and he pulled the trigger. He was the only one with earplugs. I will never ever forget to clear a semi-auto in the chamber!:what: Some lessons serve better than others.

The shooting didn't occur at a gun range. I thought NRA rules prohibited live ammunition in the classroom? If yes, the instructor's NRA instructor credentials (all of them) will be revoked by the NRA.

I'm unaware the NRA offers a Florida CCW course.

I'm unaware the NRA offers a Florida CCW course.

Saying that the CCW class was taught by a certified NRA instructor does not imply that the NRA offers a FL CCW class.

It's simply a credential that is used to verify that a person has fullfilled the NRA requirements to lead training. Which may or may not meet a particular states requirement to give training that meets the states standards.

The article states it was an "NRA class."
A gun instructor accidently shot a student in the foot Saturday during an NRA class...
I suspect the instructor is an NRA certified instructor, but the class was not an "NRA class."

Cheers!

In addition to ignoring the NRA's policy of no live ammo in the classroom, this instructor forgot the 1st fundamental rule of safe gun handling:

1. ALWAYS keep the gun pointed in a safe direction.
This is the primary rule of gun safety. A safe direction means that the gun is pointed so that even if it were to go off it would not cause injury or damage. The key to this rule is to control where the muzzle or front end of the barrel is pointed at all times. Common sense dictates the safest direction, depending on different circumstances.

Disclaimer: This news is from the internet, I think it's accurate but who knows:

The DEA agent story was interesting and I was curious what happened after, so I looked around:

According to the news reports I found, the DEA agent during the investigation claimed that he had removed the magazine and asked the class to confirm that the gun was empty first. Based upon this and interviews, the DEA deemed it an "accident" and still let him go back to work.

Surprise, surprise, It was a year or so later when this video surfaced showing the event (it was someone's home movie that wasn't supposed to exist because the guy was an undercover agent and wasn't supposed to be taped). Unfortunately, the video showed that he DIDN'T remove the magazine as he had claimed. He also makes a sketchy statement in the video saying that 'he'll probably never be able to show guns again' after he shot himself. I guess the DEA changed their minds after watching the video and suspended him.

I'm glad that he didn't get seriously hurt and die nor did any of the kids get hurt. That video is FRIGHTENING because you can see him make the error before it happens. Then it's like you just watch, waiting for the bang.

That's a gun safety lesson taken to the extreme.

AMAZINGLY, After he shoots himself, he asks someone to go get his other gun (I won't say what he's pulling out for those that didn't see it, it's almost funny to see it first). But seriously, can you blame some of those kids that start leaving the room?

I love how he says "no, no, kids, this is an empty weapon". All I could think was "yeah, so was that last one!" and I wasn't even in the room!

As a former NRA instructor all I can say is that there are some really good instructors out there and there are also complete idiots who paid the course fee and got a certificate. I never saw the NRA flunk an instructor. Check around before you sign up for a class, talk to people who took it and see what they thought about it.

Without any identifying information...I know of one personally who let one go in the training room...twice.

That's right. While going over the four cardinal rules, he pulled the trigger while covering Rule 3. BANG! Bullet went through the wall and into the range area...where people were firing. No casualties.

Owner advised him that if it ever happened again, that he need not even waste time and breath...to just get his coat and leave.

About a month later...BANG...while covering Rule 3. No casualties again.

He left without saying a word. No need, after all.

Guess where I heard he was last working. At a neighboring county sheriff's department...as a firearms safety training instructor.
