Disaster Can't Destroy Gun Rights

(Fairfax, VA) -- National Rifle Association leader Wayne LaPierre slammed New Orleans authorities Monday for seizing legal firearms from lawful residents.

"What we've seen in Louisiana - the breakdown of law and order in the aftermath of disaster - is exactly the kind of situation where the Second Amendment was intended to allow citizens to protect themselves, " LaPierre said.

"When law enforcement isn't available, Americans turn to the one right that protects all the others - the right to keep and bear arms," LaPierre said. "This attempt to repeal the Second Amendment should be condemned."

The New York Times reported last Thursday that no civilians in New Orleans will be allowed to have guns, quoting the superintendent of police that "only law enforcement are allowed to have weapons."

A Louisiana state statute allows the chief law enforcement officer to "regulate possession" of firearms during declared emergencies. "But regulate doesn't mean confiscate," said Chris W. Cox, the NRA's chief lobbyist.

"Authorities are using that statute to do what the looters and criminals could not: disarm the law-abiding citizens of New Orleans trying to protect their homes and families," Cox said.

"The NRA will not stand idly by while guns are confiscated from law-abiding people who're trying to defend themselves," he said.

"We're exploring every legal option available to protect the rights of lawful people in New Orleans," Cox said, "and we're taking steps to overturn such laws in every state where they exist."

"Local authorities in New Orleans are turning nature's assault on human life into man's assault on human rights," LaPierre said. "Four million NRA members intend to stop this unconstitutional power grab."

NOTE from the Puppy--This the strong stance I'd want and expect from the NRA. I know they aren't the organization to roll into town with guns blazing, but as a political orginization they should be (and are) yelling from the roof tops.

Bout freaking time.....

Let's see if the NRA makes good it's threats, or is this just chest beating.

My membership (actually future membership) will be determined by the NRA's actions in the next few months.

Reminds me of everyone screaming for FEDERAL Aid the day after the storm hit, when it just might take a day or three to wade through what is reality and what is reported to be reality, then issue a carefully crafted response.

The time for litigation is here

It would be really ironic if NO was one of the cities suing the firearms industry with the ultimate aim of bankrupting them. Poetic justice I hope.

I swear, I'm gonna slip off the "high road" if this keeps up.

All these folks yelling that because the GOA's angry press release beat the NRA's angry press release by 48 whole hours shows that the NRA is useless and worthless is...is.....is..................I just wish I had a big inflatable hand with the word "CLUE" printed on it that I could use to slap people with.

Yes, you are all totally right.

The NRA is worthless and a bunch of sellouts.

That's exactly why the NRA is the most feared and despised activist and lobbying group on Capitol Hill....because they are a bunch of sellouts.

That's why the media and the big-government liberals hate the NRA, because the NRA is a bunch of ineffective sellouts.

And yes, how the NRA handles the N.O. confiscations situation in the next few months, or few weeks, or even few hours (because that's what a lot of folks on this board have used, a timetable of friggin' hours) should be exactly how you judge the entire NRA.

Of course, the NRA should jump according to the timetables of a bunch of folks screaming and hollering on an internet bulletin board.......

Of course the NRA should not consult with its lawyers and carefully plan legal action against the folks doing bad things in N.O.

Of course the NRA should not wait and gather evidence and facts and information.

The NRA should DO SOMETHING RIGHT NOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The NRA should have issued its angry press release 48 HOURS AGO WHEN GOA ISSUED ITS ANGRY PRESS RELEASE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The fact that GOA's press release came out 48 hours before the NRA PROVES THE NRA IS WORTHLESS AND NO GOOD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

hillbilly

I'm not worried that GOA or whoever issued out a statement before or after the NRA.

I'm waiting to see if the NRA does anything PERIOD!!!!!!!!

I live in Cali, and the NRA has pretty much sold us out. That is why I don't have a membership with them. I don't feel they do anything for us at all here, so why give them my money. But recently I've started looking at the bigger picture (especially after the last election) and have come to the conclusion the NRA does help in the fight for the 2nd adm. Just how much, I don't know.

I still wonder if they are an overbloated fund raising toothless political party or are they something to be reckoned with? Maybe the "sleeping giant" is finally waking up and seeing that they have been a little "lacking" in their protection of the 2nd. If so, I'm freaking happy like a kid at Toys R Us, get the checkbook ready.

Mean while, NO happened and I'm watching carefully the NRA's response. I hope they prove me wrong about being toothless.

I'm with you Hillbilly.

I wonder how many people are going to stop by this thread and now admit "by golly I was wrong about the NRA in my slobbering rants allover the internet in the last couple of days."

My prediction: zero

But we'll just wait and see

It ain't the NRA that sold you out, friend. I lived there for 47 years and it's the freaks that get elected that sold you out from Arnold on down. I hope you see the big picture soon, because without the NRA we will lose all of our gun rights. I became a life member while living in CA, and so should you.

Well, this has certainly improved my view of them. I guess I'll be joining the GOA and the NRA after all.

In other news, the ACLU did NOTHING. So much for debating whether or not to carry their card. :barf:

----------------------------------------------------

You have it back wards, you people sold yourself out and continue to do so.

How many Cali gun owners are in the NRA?
The politicians pay attention to big blocks of voters, they could care less about the whining of individual gun owner's .

The NRA sold you out?

When was the last time that thousands of you Cali gun owners packed the state capital when your liberal politicians were taking away more of your gun rights?

Sitting on your hands waiting for the NRA to do your job isn't going to get it.

While you Cali gun owners sit quietly as your rights are taken away, here in Texas we just passed about 9 pro gun laws and NO anti gun laws.

Blaming the NRA ain't getting the job done.

If a couple million Cali gun owners joined the NRA you would see the Cali antigun politicians running for cover. ;)

I'd love to see the NRA take a page out of the ACLU's playbook. The ACLU's politics are offensive, but they always seem to get results.

You can bet that if the ACLU cared about the 2nd Ammendment they would have filed lawsuits against the NO authorities already.

Politically speaking, it may be too soon to attack the local government in NO, given that they're still clearing away the dead bodies. But I sincerely hope that the NRA eventually ends up owning the local politicos involved in the confiscations.

I am glad they have put this out. I hope they really do act legally on these fools who confiscated legal weapons from legal citizens. I wonder if any of these people have any of their property returned to them?

"Local authorities in New Orleans are turning nature's assault on human life into man's assault on human rights,"

A tag line Johnny Cochran would have been proud of!

Hillbilly: I can see you are angry about people not happy with the NRA. I think all of us should support all groups working for RKBA rights. The thing I think you are seeing is how I also feel, that the NRA is a big bureaucratic organization that as bureaucracies often are, are slow and overly verbal. I think people expect a lot more from the NRA than they seem to feel they get. Of course, the NRA is the largest and most powerful lobby we have, and that's a GOOD thing!

Hey... I might join!... prefer to donate anon though, I hate being on mailing lists...

No the ACLU DOES NOT care about the 2nd Amendment. They have been saying that for many years.

In an interview I read the reporter pointed out that all the Amendments were framed and hanging on the ACLU dork's wall except the 2nd. The answer was the ACLU doesn't consider the 2nd to be an individual Americans right. :fire:

M2, Hillbilly, Valkmen, great replies. It really grinds me that the those who cry the loudest and demand the most, seem to have invested the least in the defence of their 2A rights. :fire:
Working with political leaders, showing up to meetings, giving money to groups that help, and I mean not just one but several, protesting, writing letters to the editor, and your reps, and actively working to get rid of those who don't think pro 2A, is key to gun rights. :D

Wah I want someone else to do it. :cuss:

When was the last time the NRA showed it's head here in Cali. Being a gun friendly politician here is the kiss of death. That's why we have the likes of Feinstein and Boxer.

We 2nd amend people here are in Cali are outnumbered by all the freaking tree hugging soccer moms. And yes, we have protested, send e-mail, letters, our first born. What the f*ck else do you guys want us to do. Start a freaking revolution???? I'm so sick of you a-holes that say it's all our fault for sitting on our asses. Hate to break it to you. But we all didn't sit at the local starbucks doing nothing. We tried to fight it as best as we could.

If we had the support of the NRA behind us then maybe we would start winning some more battles. But as it stands now. They write us off from the start. But it's okay for us to send them money, yeah right.

:fire:

The NRA ILA endorses anti-gun or pro-gun control politicians with A and A+ ratings. Until all you cheerleaders can explain that, get off my case. I am sick and tired of your childish insults (you're cheap, you're this, you're that, when they come...). How you get away with it on The High Road is beyond me.

:cuss:

The NRA is a feel-good organization, that may move some mole-hills, but ignores the mountains. Until the NRA takes a strong public line on NFA, and until they make some progress on that end, all your stupid semi-auto ban fights and so-called victories over goofy "gun control" flavors-of-the-month mean nothing. Their just sugar for the kiddies to help the medicine of complacency in gun control go down. Without gun control in any form, as the 2A supports, the NRA would not be needed, which is why the favor "reasonable control".

The 2A has NOTHING to do with safety.
The 2A has NOTHING to do with IDPA or some other "sport".
The 2A has NOTHING to do with deer rifles and turkey guns.
The 2A has NOTHING to do with semi-auto military rifle clones, sans evil features or not.

:banghead:

But thanks for playing. Feel free to whine and moan and maybe insult me a little. Hope it makes you feel good, cause your NRA dues haven't done anything. One step forward, 2 half-steps back.

NRA members are human beings, just like me, I don't judge them, I try not to insult them without provocation. The NRA is a bloated bag of lobbyist manure. If you think that you're doing good by insulting others because they believe other than what you believe, then perhaps you're just like the NRA, minus the bag of course.

Have a day. Some of you make me sick with all of the petty insults, like a bunch of children. :barf:

Uh, how exactly? Is the NRA going to start stuffing ballot boxes or registering dead voters? There is such a thing as a lost cause you know.

You could always move back to the United States where we don't have as many rediculous gun bans.

I feel for the pain of so many people here who recognize that the NRA has betrayed them, that it is the cause of California's problems and has turned its back on them, and that everyone is out to get them.

The rest of us need to confess the truth at last: they're right, and the truth is that the NRA is a social organization that holds wild parties that we attend but to which they're not invited.

Since the confessional spirit has moved me I might as well let them know the whole truth. It's hard to admit this but we really aren't as smart as they are and in fact we really are quite stupid--losers, really, but we've been taught to read, right, and spell in English as part of a clever disguise. Everyone is indeed out to get them, the federal government will knock down their doors and kidnap their pit bulls, and--worst of all--nobody cares what happens to these lost souls who know so very much about the way the world works.

and the truth is that the NRA is a social organization that holds wild parties that we attend but to which they're not invited.

Please edit this out! My wife might stumble across this and find out the truth, not to mention the significant others of other NRA members. Oh crap! Here she comes, gotta go.
