Just wanted to see what you guys say about using Nu Finish in the tumbler. I've been using corn media from cabela's with great rezults. Only one problem with that was the price of the media. I switched to some corn media a bought at the pet store. The media from the pet store does'nt seem to work as well. I heard of guys using a cap full of Nu finish. Is Nu Finish safe to use ?

I've substituted Nu Finish in my pet store crushed walnut, when I ran out of Flitz.

It seemed to work fine. My tumbler holds 3 pounds of media. I didn't measure, but I know I used quite a bit more than a capfull.

I take it you are trying to polish with corn cob, not clean. In that case, just put a capful of kerosene in (1tbs) and let it run. Your rounds will look brand new. As for getting media, go to a local media blasting supplier, you can buy huge sacks of media for next to nothing.

I'am trying to polish and clean. Should i be using walnut instead of corn ?

Loco,

Try this:

Mix 50/50 corn cob and crushed walnut from the pet store, use the fine ground of both.

Get Nu Finish from the local Dollar General store for 4 bucks. Add a capful before each time you add brass. Turn on the tumbler and allow the Nu Finish to mix thoroughly with the tumbling media. Toss in the brass.

As Deavis suggested, kerosene will work, but if you use it in the house, the wife won't like you much and being in the doghouse isn't fun. Nu Finish has a much more pleasant scent.

You should be quite happy with the results using the methodology I suggested. I have certainly been.

Regards,

Dave

I do the same thing with corn cob & walnut - except that I got 40 pound bags from a feedstore for about $30 total (2 years ago). I still have PLENTY of both (putting in strips of used dryer sheets with each load helps keep the media cleaner and last longer).

I first used the Nu-Finish 2 weeks ago. I also went to DG ($5, not $4), and put in about 1 1/2 cap fulls. After it mixed around for about 15 minutes I dumped in a bunch of .45 brass - and it came out after 2 hours with a shine like I don't even see on most new brass.

It works, pure and simple.

Nu Finish won't remove stains and tarnish like polish with rouge in it, but if the brass is pretty decent that won't matter.

That price is outrageous. Either you got ripped off down there or they've jacked the price up to unbelievable levels. Dang.

I personally use walnut to clean brass and corn cob to polish it. It is a little faster, I think, than doing it all in one step. The walnut is aggressive and cleans quickly, follow it up with the corn cob for 10 minutes tops and you've got factory new looking ammo. The kerosene in the corn cob helps prevent tarnishing and it will take off any lube you used during loading. Paint thinner in the walnut helps cut the crud but if you are cleaning everytime, you don't really need it. Plus if you do this in two steps, you don't have to worry about handling marks all over your freshly loaded ammo, although it is just cosmetic.

I find using Nu-Finish with my media the brass is easier to size. I know Nu-finish is a polish and not a wax however the brass feels smoother.

Nu-Finish makes them cases slickery to handle too...I tried Nu-Finish and I have never dropped so many 9mmX19 cases before. Slip right outa yer fingers....Maybe it's that I'm gettin old (64)...Naw....I'm in complete denial....

I add a cap-full of Nu Finish to walnut media (It's actually Parakeet bedding from the pet store) and it shines up cases really nicely.

Edit- Are we talking about the same stuff? 16 oz. of Nu Finish costs like $7 at Auto Zone. Am I getting ripped off, or are you guys buying less than 16 oz.?

I payed at least 7 dollars for a 20once bottle of Nu-Finish at Target.
I have reduced to 1/2 cap full with each load and didn't notice any difference. It will last at least twice as long that way.

Like others, I use a 50/50 mix of walnut/cob. I use NuFinish mixed fifty fifty with mineral spirits and just put a long squirt in my midway tumbler. I've been very pleased with this combination and there is very little odor.

You can get this Frankfort Brass Polish from Midway specifically designed to clean cartridge cases 32oz for $22. The stuff has an orange base cleaner as well as a wax and polish. I picked up a bottle 5 or 6 years ago and it still has a 3rd left. I add it to pet store walnut shell or fine ground corn cob. I keep the Nu-finish for my car.

I have been very happy using "Dillon Rapid Polish 290" in corncob media. I pick it up at my local gun shop for $8.50 a bottle.
I use a couple of cap fulls per batch of brass and a bottle seems to last a good long while.
My brass comes out clean and really shinny.

Tbat's $11.50 for 16 ounces vs. $7.00 for 20 ounces for Nu Finish at Target when you do the math and tax from Target is less than what Midway charges on shipping by a good bit.

In addition, the Midway stuff tends to dry out and doesn't work as well as the Nu Finish does. I used to use the Midway polish, but switched to Nu Finish because it's cheaper, works better, is less expensive than the Midway polish, plus I can use it to polish my car.

The Dillon costs $8.50 for 8 ounces. The Nu Finish is $7.00 for 20 ounces at Target and does as good or better job than the Dillon polish, as it slicks up the brass a bit, making it easier to run through the press.

You guys are spending more and aren't getting more. I know this, because I tried and used both those polishes before switching to the Nu Finish. I'm glad I did.

Dave
