Number of loads per pound....

There are 7000 grains per pound, 437.5 grains per ounce. This is an avoirdupois measurement.

At 40 grains each, you'll get 175 loads per pound.

Hope this helps.

If my memory serves me correctly, theres 7,000 grains in a pound of powder, so just divide 7000 by the charge weight to give number of loads. ie 7000/40 = 175 loads@40gr

Thanks. Never knew there was 7000 per pound. That makes the math a lot easier.:)

When i first started loading i was all into how many rounds i can get out of a pound and if it was really worth it. i was trying to keeep cost down.

I found that when i started buying more in bulk. then started casting and saving up my bulk supplies i stopped thinking about the cost and focused on the quality. When ever i go to the gunshop i try to pick up something. I may not need it today. but it helps. if you have only 2 lbs of powder then start buying more. dont reload yet just keep building. you will soon realize its not about the cost its about the quality.. For certain guns i have a lot of rounds already made up. For those rounds i stock up on the components and powder so that as i shoot i can quikly reload. This helps on me thinking about making quality ammo versus saving a few cents.

As you are accumulating supplies it's good to have a bit of balance.

I like to try and keep my powder and primers somewhat balanced. For example, 8lbs of W231 gives me just over 10,000 .45 loads (10,181 at 5.5gr).

It makes more sense (to me anyway) to get 2 cases (5k/case) of primers for each 8lb powder instead of stocking up on just powder.
