I have a question for the up-comming Appleseed shoot in Long Island. Since NY has it's own AWB still on the books, can I bring my Virginia legal AR behind the Iron Curtain of NY, or will I become a felon once I cross the MD state line?

Thanks

Alot to go through, but probably illegal...
http://ypdcrime.com/penal.law/article265.htm

What year was it built? Pre-9/94 are OK.

2. Any person who transports or ships any machine-gun, firearm
silencer, assault weapon or large capacity ammunition feeding device or disguised gun, or who transports or ships as merchandise five or more
firearms, is guilty of a class D felony. ...

I did NOT see exemptions for assault weapons for civilians.

even if it was legal

if you were caught you would spend time in jail and if you don't have a good lawyer may end up on Rikers Island.
And lets say you win the case, it may be years, if ever that you see your rifle again.

Thanks.

I thought as much. I have a pre 94 colt SP-1 but had planned on bringing my oldest son with his 2005 Bushmaster. Either way, the maga are all new, so we'll have to catch the event a bit closer to home. I lived in NY for years and Calverton was like a second home. I had hoped to meet up with some old friends and attend together.

Just a follow up... I heard on the cable services that if the DC 2nd. ammendment fight makes its way to the SCotUS and is upheld as an individuals right that it would nul and void all other restrictive gun laws?

Any thoughts?

the decision upheld govt's right to regulate similar to 1A (you cannot yell fire in a crowded theatre for ex).

What IS encouraging is that it seems to lend more support for state of the art military style firearms.

It is likely the first of several steps and would not surprise me to see it go through the full court and then referred to SCOTUS....probably right around the 2008 election.

There are a few threads going on about this, so be sure to check them out, but I have to think it will make a BIG difference IF each law is challenged...lot of others smarter then me on this matter though! ;)

The NYS assault weapons ban is a mirror of the old federal one. If you wish to visit NYS with an assault rifle or shotgun, treat the visit as if the old federal ban never fell. Assault Rifles and Hi-Cao Mags owned prior to 1994 are AOK. Keep in mind that certain cities (like Rochester and Buffalo) have their own gun ordinances. Also NYC has a MUCH stricter AW ban than the rest of the state. NYC also requires that ALL weapons, even bolt-action rifles, be registered with the city.

You still need to go through NJ to get to NY. We have our own stupid laws and out of staters have been arrested while transporting.
