At Dick's too.
I used to live in NY, and they asked for my pistol permit all the time. "Marlin Camp Nine" or "Auto Ordinance .45 Thompson" or ".357 levergun" have been my only replies for years. (I have a NYS CCW Permit and a handful of supplementals) I NEVER have shown them my permit. I always gave my DL and told them I had to be eighteen to buy ammo for my long arms. (I'm 33)
I did one time show them my military ID, and was told "that's all you need to buy whatever you want". I found that puzzling, because I see no military provision in the state's laws about ammo purchasing.
