Eariler tonight I went into walmart to pickup some small shoot'n'c targets, some breakfree, and ammo. As I was looking at the cleaning supplies (which are almost behind the ammo counter) I heard someone say "do you need help" in a loud voice. I didn't pay any attention to it because I figured it was someone asking the woman that was standing by the counter. A person came over to where I was kneeling, and said "do you need help" in a loud voice. I said I was just looking at their cleaning supplies and that I was fine. The guy gave me a weird look, and stood watching me. I felt uncomfortable, however I wasn't going to let that ruin my shopping.

After I picked over wat they had for cleaning supplies, I went over to the counter, and asked the guy what ammo they had for .223. He immediately said "there are no guns and ammo sales after 10", A store policy I had no idea existed (Although I figured they would have a policy like that). I responded with something like "Ohh really, thats not good". The guy then responded with a angry tone with something along the lines of "Its not like you need to buy ammo at this hour hanyways:uhoh: ".

I was immediately baffled by that comment, comming from a guy who appeared to be in his late 40s to mid 50s. The way he said it, and the tone he used really offended me. I wouldn't have a problem if it was one of the guys I know at a gun store, saying that because they know I have a lot of ammo, in a joking way. The problem is I only have 40 rounds of 223 for range use, I didn't know this guy, and he acted in a very offensive manner. I didn't even waste my time with him, we had a 5 second stare down contest and I left. I wont be going back to that walmart at night anymore. During the day a really nice group of employees run the ammo counter. They never check my ID (Which is nice because I look like I am 30, and its a hassle to find my ID) they always are nice, and they don't treat me like I am some ****.

Any of you have similar experiances with wally world?

Yea, I found this out a few years ago. I was gearing up for a shoot I had, so I went into walmart early in the morning as soon as I got up to go purchase shotgun ammo for the day. I arrived at walmart at about 5am. I walked back to the sporting goods section and loaded up a basket with the 100 round packs. and I mean loaded (about 1500 rounds).

So I walk up to the checkstand, and start putting it up on the counter, the girl behind the counter starts to ring me up not even phased by what I was buying. Then the computer spit out some kind of error code, after about 10 minutes the manager was called over to tell the cashier what was going on. The manager informed me that it was 'illegal' to purchase ammunition between 10pm and 8am. This was the stupidest thing I had ever heard. Looking at the basket full of ammo, she looked at me somewhat confused. I told her I was putting on a big shotgun shoot that morning and I needed the ammo for it.

As providence would have it, a local cop was walking around the store drinking his coffee. So I talked to him about it, he had never heard of such a thing earlier.

After a severe amount of complaining, and the officer looking through the CPC he could find no reference to this law, the manager capitulated and let me buy my ammo.

Regardless, it was pretty frustrating. I don't think I've bought ammo from there since then.

Wal-Mart?

I hate them. You should have said thank you and spent your money somewhere else. As far as i am concerned wal mart is evil, they need to be put out of business...

Yeah thats MHO

Guns are better than Prozac

They told me the same thing awhile back. Only it was handgun ammo. You could buy hunting ammo (there words for shotgun and rifle ammo) but no handgun ammo until 8:00 am. I was furious and left.

It is a real stupid policy on there part.

That is not very high road. If you dont like there policy I agree but cursing out the cashier is not right as she is doing her job and the computer is telling her she cant do it.

Huh. I've dropped by my local Wally World and picked up a few hundred rounds of 9mm at 3am on more than one occaision. Never had a problem other than the fact I usually had to wait half an hour for someone to show up in sporting goods.

not selling ammo in the morning is just stupid. i can see the no late night sale of ammo being not to crazy, in some areas, but what gangbanger is gonna get up and out da crib before 8am? the only people who would buy ammo that early are sportsmen.

id have complained to his manager if a employee was that rude to me.

When they ask you that in a loud voice, it's usually if they think you're suspicious and want to make sure you're about to steal something or generally up to no good. This is the same treatment a lot of black people get at gunshops, "brothers in bling" or whatever. BTW, if you think 3am counts as early in the morning, I've got news for you. Most college people stay up this late, or later on the weekends. It's 3 right now and I haven't gone to sleep.

Acadamy is a quarter of a mile from our WM. All the above in general & their is the reason I dont go to WM unless they are the only one in town that has what I want. At any price. I dont support WM.

The rules at Wal-Mart have nothing to do with the law, and even most of the employeees do not understand them.

I assume they only have a couple of guys working the day/evening shift who know how to fill out the BATF forms, and they are off after 10PM. The ammo is kept in the same locked case as the guns, right? I suspect the keys went home with the persons qualified to sell guns.

Just a guess. I agree, it's a silly rule, but the best employees (those who will seek extra training such as gun/ammo sales) deserve the day shift, and leaving the keys with the night shift might be a bad idea. There's always the gun store........

And on the flip side...
I like the Wal-Mart here, one of the few that still sells ammo and firearms-related gear. I'm going to have to see if they have an after-hours restriction, though.
When I run into in-store rudeness or other mistreatment, I don't let them get away with it. Get that guy's name (they usually wear big honkin' name tags), complain in a clear and calm manner verbally and in writing to management AND THEN take your custom elsewhere. At least let them know why. Sometimes this can work in your favor in the form of discounts or even freebies in an effort to smooth your ruffled feathers and keep you coming back.

Wal-Mart vs Barnes & Noble book store

If I ran a store where 99% of sales were non-gun and the BATFE fine for writing Ala instead of Alabama, was 100% of my annual gun profit, you bet I'd only sell when I'm there.

Senator John Edwards was at a Barnes & Noble book store derideing Wal-Mart's low pay. He did not bother to find out that Barnes & Noble book stores pay less than Wal-Mart.

I just bought a coffee maker for $39.95 at Wal-Mart that was $59.95 at the local Ace hardware.

How is this bad?

I've been selling sporting goods for K-mart a while now, and while we did have a company firearms-time restriction at a 24hr store I worked, it was unwritten in the books and the occasional one could be bought at midnight. Ammunition was availiable whenever you could get someone there to help you. Every now and then we have odd hours (7-11 at the moment) but if someone came in for ammo right at 7am or 5 minutes till close, I'd sell it. There's nothing telling me otherwise. God bless Ohio.

I was dressed in a suit, the walmart is in a good area of town, and I acted polite towards the guy. That wasn't enough I guess. I wasn't in there at an unreasonable time either, around 11. I will avoid the place at night, they must not trust that moron with the guns or ammo. I say that because he never works behind the ammo counter before 10.

well bigf'ken

when wallmart puts ace out of busness because they can not compete with wallmarts golbal buying then guess what you will have to pay for that coffee maker when only one place in town sells them.;)
