The NYS Pistol Permit application asks the following question:

"A License is required for the following reason:"

How should I answer such an open-ended question? Should I stick to the obvious and keep it a complete sentence like
"In the event that deadly force should be neccessary to preserve the lives of my family and myself, I request that a permit allowing the carry of a concealed handgun be granted by the state of New York."
or go for a broader range like
"For use during hunting, hiking, target and competition shooting, recreation and as a method of self defense in a situation of last resort."

I dont really know how they want it answered.

Please help!

Thanks everyone!:D

I don't think I had to do that for my CT permit... But, "All Lawful Purposes" is often suggested.

It may depend on what county of NY you are in. I have heard that some issuing authorities have differing opinions about what is acceptable in your State.

It sort of depends. My sheriff deputy suggested, "Hunting and target shooting".

If you want your permit without too much delay, use that.

Otherwise use "All lawful purposes".

Here in the most crime free part of NYS--clinton county--new pistol permits (last 25 years or so) are stamped with a red stamp over the license--for hunting, fishing and targert shooting. Franklin county, on our western boundry didn't have this 4 years ago when my daughter and her hubby received theirs, now Fanklin county is stamping with the same nonsense! My 39 year old permt was updated, to the new credit card hard plastic last summer, and because was not originally stamped didn't have to be so stamped.

Down here on the western end of the state (Chautauqua County). Getting a unrestricted permit is pretty easy. My answer for that question was, for all lawfull purposes and also for personnal protection in performing my daily duties in my Job, which require me to transport, store, use, and inventory High explosives. Granted having a job that can justify the need for a permit makes it easier but the for all lawfull purposes is always a good one.

So are we talking, "all lawful purposes", and thats it? or in tandem with other things? It just seems strange to me that they wouldent care when they get an assload of applications that all say "lawful purposes"

HAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHAAAHAAAAA! Everyone loves the chance to throw zombies into a conversation!

Im not 100% sure if that would bring my sanity into question, though if the Sheriff is a THR member it might go the other way for me!:neener:

Are you going for a NYC carry, or Target?

If it's a target the answer is obvious, if you are going for a carry, "I had one", you better ask an attorney who specializes in helping people obtain their permit. If you mess up on one thing, you aren't going to get it. Make sure you know the right answer, the one that they are looking for, exactlly. That's the best advice I can give you. I just reread your post, if that is NYS, New York State, the answer should be in the material that they gave you along with the app. If not look on the state web site, and it should say, unter licenses, just find the catagory, and you're answer should be there.

Use every reason you can think of, except "for self defense"; I would include "for all lawful purposes" though.

Hunting, fishing (snakes!), hiking, target and competition shooting, dog walking, collecting, and alll lawful purposes."

(make sure you have a hunting license, a dog, etc.)

The idea is be able to limit THEIR restrictions to be as broad as possible should they choose to issue less then "full carry". Not sure if you will need to go before a judge to show cause, but traditionally "self defense" would require a specific example ("large sums of money late at night", &c.)

gym,

not in the city.

i have heard of those people though... like, application subcontractors or something. I would suggest though that anyone in nyc would seek out one of these professionals. The fees are probably insane, but then again if youre really determined enough to go throuh all the rediculous hoops (flaming hoops mind you, theyre 6 inches across and two miles in the air) to own a gun in the city a fee probably isnt a big deal.

Collecting... now theres one that i forgot! well done!

They restrict them all in broome county to hunting/target shooting only. It sucks big time. I'd like my wife to have a permit so she could carry concealed when she goes for walks up the road. Of course she can carry and nobody will ever know, but if it came down to it....

Did anyone see the Sean Hannity where he was dealing with an anti on this the anti said for NYC they had eased the system so it was easier to get one, yeah sure I bet what surprised me is Sean looked into it and apparently it would have been very hard for him to get one.

"For All Lawful Purposes".

That is the standard acceptable reason. Since you don't necessarily know all the reasons you'll ever use it for - but do know they'll be lawful - that's the correct answer.

Only exception is if your county specifically forbids unrestricted carry (as Onondaga County did when I got mine - they even had a sign saying "Self Defense Is Not A Valid Reason" over the permit office window), in which case you use any valid acceptable reason ("Hunting and Target Shooting", "Sport", "Home Defense", etc.).

"For All Lawful Purposes" suffices in most cases.

You don't need anyone to help with a New york state, or Nassau/Suffok carry, but you still can't carry in NYC, Manhatten, and the Boroughs, that's what I was referring to. When I had mine maybe 1 out of ten thousand got approved, they were reffered to as "the gold card", good anyware in NY, City state etc. I kept my old one when I moved to FL. At the time I first got mine "early seventys", you had to have letters from the Bank, attorney, character whitnesses , accountant, showing w2's, and on and on, and proof that your business handled 5 grand in cash deposits and you were responsible for them, which was a lot of money back then, "for cash", now I heard it's like 50 grand per week, and it's almost impossible to get one. So when I started living in FL, it was like the lotto, I already knew that it was simple and the guns were not listed on the permit. In Ny the guns are registered, and you are limited to what is on you're carry permit, most times it was one gun, I was allowed two, down here you could buy whatever you could want and afford, ahh a paradise full of heavilly armed people, and tropical drinks, how can you beat that.

I am familiar with some of the western counties such as Wyoming, Genesee and Monroe. I was told when I took a pistol class and also by the county clerks that you should write hunting, target and personal protection.

I got mine in Wyoming co. a few years back and it took less than two months for an unrestricted permit. Monroe county takes longer but is still very 2A friendly. Clerk comes to the gun shows and even the friends of the NRA dinner. Genesee County restricts to "Sporting Purposes" only and we are working on a political solution to that problem..

The judge makes the decision so if he making a bad one show him the error of his ways through letters and phone calls. If he doesn't change his mind find a good judge to run against him in the next election and promote him with fellow gun owners. The SCOPE organization has been pretty good in this area.

what was suggested to me when i applied was check out
the local gun clubs and talk to members...they can be very
helpful as to what to put down in your application (and what
not to put down....self defense, i was told by many, is something
NOT to put down)

also, your licensing class teacher will have some good pointers too

also, in my county, the clerk in the licensing office was also very very
helpful in my obtaining "full carry" permit

she suggested to me to write a letter to the judge telling him
that i do lots of hiking and backpacking (which is true) along
with the other various outdoor activities and this would help to
get the license to carry concealed
(i mentioned having run into a number of rabid animals while
hiking and also various snakes and having access to a pistol would have made me feel more safe)

it worked!

I got mine in Chautauqua county NY over twenty years ago and stated I wanted it for hunting, target shooting and self defense and got it (CCW permit) with no problems - After getting it, I went back and told them I wanted an added clause on it for 'personal protection' as I worked in Corrections - It now also states that on the top of the permit.

When I originally applied in Greene I just put down target, self defense, hunting and had no problem getting an unstamped full carry permit. Once I moved to Tioga I went thru the transfer process which was relativly painless and now my permit is from Tioga and has "UNRESTRICTED" stamped on the top.

Thanks again everyone for all your advice. I decided on the following:

"Hunting, hiking, target and competition shooting, collecting and all other lawful purposes."

Id like to add something else though to my question, Im applying in a county that does not require a safety course to get the permit. If I move to a county that does, do I need to take one before I can get the county change amendment?

Thanks again.

Where in Chautauqua county? I just got mine in recently from Mayville and have to say the process was 100% easier than I expected.
