O.A.L. Gauge readings.

I am using the Hornady O.A.L gauge and comparator with .223 case. I am getting various reading that I don't think have anything to do with the seating of the bullet as I am using a light touch. Readings are varying if I turn the gauge thru 180 degrees. Variance is I think substantial. 1.818, 1.827, 1.857 using a Hornady 50 grain sp bullet. When I use the 50 grVmax, the same thing happens. Is it the bullet so far out of round? Seems really unlikely. Any suggestions?. Also, when I look at the possible space for jump, it seems very large. OAL in book is 2.210 at bullet tip, not ogive. Any comments on that?. measuring on a cz527. Factory ammo (Fiocchi) seems to work well at 40 grains, but I am trying to improve on it. Comments please and thanks in advance.

I am assuming that that when you say you turn the gauge you mean that the case is techincally rotating in the comparator. I have found that I get more consistant readins if I jiggle the round in the compatator before I take the measurement. The compatator cannot measure Out Of Roundness. Think about it. When you close the tool the compatator will rest on the highest spot of the ogive and since both are round it will not matter what position the highest rests on the compatator it will hit the same high spot first. I could be wrong though. One thing that could effect it is the case rim. If the case head is not flush across when it is rotated the calibers go from resting on two spots of the case rim to another and continue to change as you rotate it.

Do the readings vary when you turn just the bullet 180 degrees without turning the gauge? That should tell you if it's the bullet or the gauge.

I agree with higgite. Are you unscrewing the modified case for the LNL when you turn the gauge??
