Odd Phone Call Today

I didnt even think of being served. Hopefully that is just what it is. He did say it would only take 15-20 minutes. I have never been served is this about the time frame?

You ask for his barracks number, and he suddenly comes up with some vague line about a "federal task force"?

Could be a setup for a Home Invasion/Robbery.

Be very careful.

I don't like the sound of this.

I have been served a summons (witness) and it takes about 1 second, the deputy pulled up in a marked cruiser, knocked on door, handed me paper and left.

This is VERY fishy sounding. I would call the state police and let them know about it. Probably call a lawyer as well, but my first thought here is "home invasion/robbery".

except, for home invasion to be the case, the guy would most likely be more interested in when Jester is NOT there, rather than when he IS there. Especially considering that he likely knows Jester is armed given that he likely found out Jester's employment given Jester's firearm purchase applications.

Did he ask what your schedule was and what times wouldn't work? As in, when would you NOT be home?

No comment, other than I'm just tagging this, as I am interested in the outcome.

Oh...and I've never had to fill out employment info on a 4473 either. Can you elaborate on where you are filling out employment info during a firearms purchase?

I think I would opt to contact the person and request to meet at HIS office (with Counsel, of course). This certainly does sound suspicious. IF you do meet at your house, if he needs a drink of water, escort him to the kitchen. IF he needs to go to the bathroom, escort him there, too. Make sure there is NOTHING in sight (or in a cupboard/ medicine cabinet) that could be of any consequence.

In connecticut we have a few additional state level forms, on one of the forms it ask for occupation.

He did not ask for what times I would be working, I told him I had tomorrow off and that was the best time to meet me. I will be contacting the state police today to try and check some info.

Uh... you DO have all your licensing in order for the bail enforcement thing? Do you ever actually go out and chase folks down?

Call the state boys, and see if this is the real deal.

If you let him in your house, and he wants to use the restroom, he should find a medicine cabinet full of golf balls (hold piece of cardboard, starting from bottom, and add golf balls. Move the cardboard up, filling subsequent shelves. When full, close door, and pull cardboard out from bottom.)

Did you get his name? If so, call the state police back and ask if there is in fact such a thing going on.

Another +1 to not meeting at your house.

If something like that happened to me I probably would have done the same thing initialy.
If that happend where I live, I would go to the DAs office and speak to them in person about this. Also talk to an some attorneys I know and not be there for the meeting at my residence.
On second thought I would speak with a trusted attorney before going to the DA.
Probably not a subpeana or summons. I can only think of a few times when I was called before being served and I already knew I was going to court. I've been served many many times and that aint how it's usually done.
Probably something to due with one of the people you delt with in the bail bond job. The guy didnt wanna tell ya about it cause you might tip the perp off. May be the cops schedual is so busy he is just trying to organize his time better.

Please let us know what happens.

now that's brilliant! Embarasses the guy for snooping around as well as gives jester audible notification of what's going on.

If that was the last call on the phone can you *66 it to call the number back?

Just a thought.

If it were me and you couldn't get a hold of them (I would call the state police too) I would not let them near the house and I would have someone there as a witness. I would call your lawyer now and get counsel.

Couple of updates:
I do not have caller ID and it was on my home phone I have no way of calling back at this time.

I contacted the state police they are unable to verify the call, they are workign with 2 federal task force and they cannot verify that either one will be looking to talk to me. However they said that this doesnt mean it was a legit call. I asked the trooper what to do, he said to ask for a badge and ID. I explained I wasnt comfortable getting that close. He advised me to call the barracks when he arrives and verify info.

I contacted my local police and advised them on the situation they said they would send a patrol by my house from time to time.

My brother is home and I have advised him of whats going on he is now armed with my Berreta and his 9mm.

I am trying to go through the correct channels to verify this call but have been unsucessful. I am running out of ideas at this point.

Another though occured, my state keeps a list of all bail enforcement agents and their home address as public record. It would be very resonable to think that they would be armed and have some firearms in the house. It is possible that he is trying to find some easy guns for the taking.

That is truly odd, jester. Let's hope that everything is on the up-and-up and this fool just wants to talk about some benign bg you might have been hunting.

Please be careful, and keep us updated as to what the deal is.

Seems like a lot of work just to steal from you.

I'd be extra cautious ... it could be someone you brought in that is quite unhappy about it.

Huh, I don't recall of ever having to put down my profession on a 4473. What forms are you filling out? Are you not a bail enforcer?
It might be state requirement, in IL we have to fill out such a form.

Easy-don't answer the door when he shows, that way he'll have to call back and reschedule.("I'm sorry,I had a family emergency and had no way to reach you-Why don't we meet at your office or the local PD barracks?")

Be there in case it's a burglary thing, just make it appear no one is home...;)

Last summons I got took less than 2 minutes, after he got his adrenaline level back down after I put him face down on my deck at gunpoint.(Not a uniformed LEO,just some seedy looking process server who showed up at 8am holding his hand behind his back)...All my friends and acquaintances would agree that's a VERY bad idea...;)

Avoidance.... Put a note on your door. "Officer: I needed to go into town. Please call me on my cell (123)456-7890 and we can meet at local PD" Or any place you are comfortable with. For me there is a classroom that I can use anytime there is not meetings going. Put a sign on door "All conversations inside this room are recorded via audio and vidio" Then set up your cam corder or tape recorder. It is not legal in many states unless it is posted. (if he does not read notes on door its his problem)
If he asks why you so paroanid mention you TRIED to contact him and the State Police had NO knowledge of who he was/what he wanted.

Should I contact the state police and ask if they know anything about it. Should I request a local car to meet me there?
If it's part of an on-going investigation, even if the staties know something they aren't going to tell you. Especially not if you're the one being investigated.

I came upon this thread rather late in the day, but I second (or third, or ...) the advice to be sure you have an attorney present for the meeting, and do not allow the officer inside your house (or your garage). Get any attorney you can find on short notice. It doesn't have to the local Perry Mason, it just needs to be someone to (a) be a witness, and (b) serve notice on the policeman that (if this is what he has in mind) you will not be railroaded into making any self-incriminating statements.

If there's a real problem, you can hire Perry Mason later.

Not hardly. Service involves him handing a summons and you signing a piece of paper. 2 minutes is a long time for all that. The server doesn't even want you to read the paper in front of him. His job isn't to help you understand it -- he's just a messenger. His job is to hand you the piece of paper. Period.
