Odd Phone Call Today

Cops often lie and say you're not in trouble, it's a trick to make you lower your guard.

Change the meeting to a neutral location (WITH CAMERA COVERAGE), get down the officers badge number, name, and any other relevant information.

If i was you i would also remove the guns from the house. keep only your carry piece.

leave them at a trusted friends or relatives house.

I would be worried about getting arrested. Sure they could come in the dark of night, but why go through all of that when you can schedule your "meeting".

I don't have a lawyer, but I would not be their either. Across the street in the neighbors house, or maybe in the woodline.

I know it may sound crazy, but you could put your phone on the front porch, with a note (written in crayon would be best) that says "answer the phone.!" Then make him hold up his badge and ID, stand there until your cop buddies come by and verify.

If he is the real deal, ask him what he wants... if he is going to arrest you, hang up and then begin shopping for a lawyer/raising bail from the comfort of Holiday Inn rather than the crossbar hotel.

Yes, I do have a fantastic immagination, but this crap scares me.

I would be surprised if this was an attempt to case for or perpetrate an actual robbery. Of course the caller might soon be the subject of one of those Stupid Criminal stories. I also don't believe it is a summons either, like the others, they really like to have the element of surprise and just show up. I got a call similar to yours once a very long time ago and they were doing an investigation of a neighbor that had applied for a job in Oak Ridge that required a security clearance. He was FBI though and came by the same day and he would not say why either, just that he had a couple of questions. I was young and dumb and thought it was neat that the FBI wanted to talk to me, hahahaha! I did have some friends present and the guy never asked to come in. I hope that or something similar is the same type of visit you get.

The neighbor didn't get the job, though not because of anything I said:uhoh:

I think this is just blown way out of proportion.
Me too.

Some of you guys watch way too many movies.

Fer crying out loud, just meet the guy. If he tries anything, defend yourself. If he starts asking a lot of questions, refuse to answer them.

I think this is just blown way out of proportion.
Fun though! After all, none of us has to worry about the consequences of our suggestions except Jester.

Jester, I'd be cautious, but your remark to cops about "defending yourself" makes you sound pretty badly rattled. Working yourself into a lather won't really help at all.

Rattled

Jester, I'd be cautious, but your remark to cops about "defending yourself" makes you sound pretty badly rattled. Working yourself into a lather won't really help at all.

H*#L yes he is rattled. He has been reading all of the stuff on this thread. I'm scared too and I don't have anything to do with it.:D Does make one think though.:scrutiny:

to anyone in CT: watch the news at 11 tonight. they just mentioned on the fox 61 news at 10 that there have been several reports of people posing as polce/fire or state officials and forcing their way into homes and robbing them.

I've been thinking 'bout this since making MY original post~! And now, that
you have certainly threatened them; you probably need to go ahead and
LAWYER UP, just in case TSHTF~!

Not in almost 21 years of law enforcement did I ever call up anyone and
ask if I could make a date to come over for a "chit chat". That just does
not happen in "real world" law enforcement. The only valid reason I can
see [and its really far fetched]; is if this nice state police officer may
have recovered some of YOUR stolen property, and needs you to idenify
it? But, then again unless its a "PO DUNK" police department; that mostly
likely would occur at police headquarters.

And- the fact that NO other police agency seems too know this character
really is reason for concern~!:uhoh::scrutiny:;)

Really Jester, after reading your initial post and the ones following, if this guy is legit LE then I'll dance around the city wearing a bra and grass skirt singing "Its raining men" at the top of my lungs.

I would lock my front door and set up a picnic table outside with a lawn umbrella. Arm myself to the teeth and do everything in my freakin power to have a buddy from LE present.

Most cops have paperwork to do anyway; I'd ask them if an officer could come work on his in my driveway (or near thereabouts)

You mentioned your brother being there, that is a good thing, no way in h-e-double-hockey-sticks I'd let them into my home.

Might also call the police and tell them again what happened, mention the home invasions, and ask them if they could come out for a sting. I'd bet they would be happy to get the thugs off the streets, and if this punk does try anything you will have several armed people there waiting for trouble.

Anyone from THR in his area could go over and spend some quality time with a buddy from the Internet? Another body couldn't hurt.

I can see it now, Police interview:

'Ok, so, who are these people?'
"They are just some of my gun buddies"

'And, why are they here?'
"Well I told them what happened and some of them mentioned that they would be happy to come over and watch out for me"

'So, what happened with him (pointing to the phony LE)?'
"Well, I hadn't seen too many of my buddies arrive yet, but when this guy walked up and pulled out his gun and fired at me, all of a sudden there were like fifteen freakin people making Swiss cheese out of him..."

Ala Dan, he has stated a couple of times that he is in Connecticut.

If it is the police isnt it reasonable to think that their will be atleast 2 of them to do anything on private property?
Why would you suppose that?

Let's keep in mind that this is going down in Connecticut, and ostensibly involves a CT state police officer who claims to be working on/with some Federal task force. Okay, there are such task forces, but in my neck of the woods they usually involve the locals (often multiple municipalities, the staties, and the Feds. It's difficult to imagine why one statie would be making appointments to chat.

What concerns me is that just a few months ago the CT State Police department was very much in the news, and not in a good way. In fact, the CT State Police were investigated by no less and no ther than the Connecticut Attorney General. He brought in the NEW YORK (!) state police to investigate the CT State Police, and the result was a finding that the CT State Police Department is rotten to the core. They do bad things, and the internal affairs division acts as a rubber stamp to quash complaints and investigate the complainers.

I didn't get any Spidey sense that the caller is other than a state cop. Given that this is CT, though, the fact that it probably is a statie is cause (IMHO) for concern. Whatever you do, Mr. Jester, do not trust this individual. The CT State Police have proven themselves to be, as an institution, untrustworthy.

In all likelihood, it's just a background check on someone who listed the guy as a reference...

A member of a "federal task force" wouldn't be out doing a background investigation. Plus if it was a background investigator 99% of the time he would conduct the interview over the phone unless it was an address that the applicant lived at. This stinks to high heaven. I can't think of any reason that I had while working in Law Enforcement to call someone up and ask to come to their home without telling them the reason why. The only reason would be to serve a warrant and if that was the case I would have gone over after hanging up the phone since I knew he was then at home. Be careful!

When I talked to the state police the SGT i spoke with informed me that the state police were currently involved in 2 federal task forces. He then told me he would call me back and contacted SGTs in those task forces to see if he could find any info on why I was contacted. He returned my call a little less then an hour later stating he was unable to make a connection but that did not mean it wasnt legit.

More then anything I am very concerned that the police do not keep very good track of where their officers are and what they are doing. It is a little unsettling to read about all these home invasions and fake police then call the police and get an "I don't know" reply.

My local police assured me they would be in the "area" tomorrow morning, atleast I know most of them by name and face. Nothing to do now but sleep and wait till morning. I will keep everyone posted. Thank you for the insight and concerns.

Edit: I mentioned to the state trooper on the phone that I had recently purchased a few firearms and it seemed like it clicked with something in his head. Maybe they think I am a straw purchaser. Good thing I have all my receipts and firearms in my control. Its really not knowing whats going on that is killing me, I would sleep much better tonight if I knew that there were 6 armed men coming to rob me in the morning then not knowing at all.

Well, it could also be the New Haven Gangs TF, but probably not. And it's typical that the local Troop really dosen't know.
I used to get that all the time. We are not talking about the best IT infrastructure in the history of ever here. SLFU has NICS over the phone for gun purchases, but the State's Attorney's Office has faxed spreadsheets of badge numbers for matching Troopers to speeding tickets.

It's pretty clear from your responses that you intend to play tough guy and be there when this individual arrives. Too bad, because it looks like a "film at 11:00" event is about to occur.
This thing stinks to high heaven. You have heard from folks with experience in such matters that it is not summons, it is not a background investigation, and that it just does not make sense.
The smart thing is to not be there when this guy arrives. Be down the block concealed in some fashion. Watch what he does when he realizes you are not home. A ten spot says he breaks into your place.
At that point your fingers need to be tapping out 9-1-1 on your cell, calling in the local gendarmes.
Hopefully, I am full of it and this turns out to be a non-event, but I doubt that is the case.
Good luck.

Yeah... Note on the door, let's meet at city hall... something like that.

If he breaks in...

THAT IS NOT YOUR JOB. Don't deal with it. All you do is call 911, and sit back and be a good witness. Take those big clanking things, and stick 'em in trunk, because they'll just get you in trouble.
