Odd Phone Call Today

An interesting situation all around. I'm glad that things went off without any serious hitches (you getting shot, arrested, or otherwise troubled anymore than spending a few minutes talking with the officers).

There are some genuinely bad folks out there, and I don't mind the cops doing what they can (within the bounds of the law, of course) to stop these bad guys. Occasionally there's a minor mixup, or they're just following up on some anonymous tip. Hardly the end of the world.

Jester, I think you handled things about as well as could be reasonably done. It might have been a stretch to have a lawyer waiting for you when the cops show up (though if questioning gets a bit too close for comfort, you can exercise your right to remain silent and summon a lawyer), but I think you handled everything right.

I'd be interested in any follow-up, if any, that comes from this encounter.

Anyway, I had no idea that the rest of the people on the forums were that paranoid. I mean, there's reasonable precautions against a person with unknown-but-probably-criminal intentions, and there's reasonable precautions against a person with unknown-but-probably-routine-law-enforcement intentions.

The cops were just doing their job, followed up on a tip, and didn't take more than a few minutes of jester's time. No biggie.

HeyPete.
I am not sure where we draw the line between "paranoid" and "very careful". I was at a seminar recently where I heard a BATF bimbo (A cute, some-movie-star look a-like, about in her late 20's) telling how she could bust in anywhere without a warrant if she needed to. This was not at the presentation it was in casual conversation after the event. This person was firmly convinced that God was her right-hand man.

Anyway, I had no idea that the rest of the people on the forums were that paranoid. I mean, there's reasonable precautions against a person with unknown-but-probably-criminal intentions, and there's reasonable precautions against a person with unknown-but-probably-routine-law-enforcement intentions.

I think we would all agree that there are many investigations we would support but BATF, and by extension the other .gov agencies such as the FBI, are extremely dangerous to our freedom, not just our 2A rights, when they think they are the sole judge of their own actions.

Shooter - you're preaching to the choir. I agree that in many cases, government agencies can be detrimental to freedom.

However, when the cops call ahead of time to make an appointment, there's a difference between "preparing to resist an armed assault on my home" and "let me make sure that anything remotely incriminating or suspicious is out of sight, go over some of answers to questions I'd expect them to ask, and otherwise be prepared for what's likely to be a brief interview" -- one is paranoid, the other is prudent.

If they were to show up at one's house, finding the resident heavily armed, with numerous armed persons present, what would they make of it? They'd probably be somewhat suspicious, and this might prompt further followups, which would not be desired by the homeowner.

Now, if they showed up and found a discreetly armed homeowner (not terribly uncommon) who was pleasant, offered them cool drinks as they sat down on the patio, and generally behaved like an ordinary person, they'd probably think "Well, this was a waste of time.", bid the homeowner good day, and leave.

If they call to make an appointment, they're probably not going to be crashing through the front door.

Remember -- one has the right to shut up and lawyer up at any time. There's no sense in making a mountain out of a molehill.

Couple a few of the things, if that was actually an FBI and a statie, and it plays nicely with the FBI wanting to have most terrorism in the US be "homegrown." They're nuts over the militias, etc., etc... Why?

Their jurisdiction doesn't go outside the US. So they have to show cause that they should operate in an antiterrorism role here in the US.
Good point, bogie. It also "fits" because the FBI's jurisdiction is limited to matters involving more than one state. Of course, thanks to the courts ever-expanding definitions of what constitutes interstate commerce, pretty much anything could be made to be fair game, it Internet is a natural. Buy your ammo or your ballistic vest over the Internet, and you're involved in Interstate commerce and the fibbies have jurisdiction to look at you.

I think jester5167 is full of it.

This story is BS.

Sorry.

FBI? Asking for your screen names? Gimme a break. They can lift that in about 2 seconds. They'd know if you were involved in anything illegal and would have no reason to talk to you or ask you about screen names.

Folks, this thread is a hoax. Just follow the story. Ignore all posts except for the actual events. Does this sound like law enforcement? Sure, LE does some strange things...but they way it plays out is just too convenient.

I agree.

Guys, you've been had. Read his posts again. LE questioning someone because of "questionable purchases?" Gimmie a break.

Here's a thread on SOCNET where jester5167 tells everyone that he was in Special Ops. A number of members were very skeptical of this claim:

http://www.socnetcentral.com/vb/showthread.php?t=68818

The regulars on SOCNET are the Real Deal™. And they grill him good.

Occam's Razor applied here indicates to me that...it just might have happened the way jester said, especially since it had a more, ah, mundane ending than most folks were predicting.

Also, I checked that SocNet thread and it seemed most of the regulars were trying to play gotcha with jester from the first post, if not being downright hostile and rude.

Yea, and they did it for a reason: they saw right through him. (FYI you need to read all three pages to realize this.)

They explain that they are investigating a tip they received about some purchases that I had made online in the last several months. Just a side note I have purchased a good deal of tactical gear and body armor recently (bail enforcement). I explained that I was an active BEA and gave them my credentials.

Really? So if I buy a bunch of body armor and tacticool stuff, LE is interested? Is this SOP for LE? Has this ever happened to anyone else??

They asked about my military service and whether I was involved in any militias or groups planning to overthrow the government. I explained that I was a veteran and was dedicated to my country. They asked if I had ever encountered groups like that in CT. I said no.

LE doesn't give a crap about militia groups. (Yea, a few idiot militia members have been convicted of crimes. But their involvement w/ the militia was incidental.) I've been very actively involved in a militia for over 4 years now, and LE has never taken an interest in us. Heck, we even have a sheriff's deputy in our group.

Sorry guys, but his posts sound like BS to me. And the SOCNET thread - where he disappeared after 8 posts (after being grilled by some members) - only reconfirms my suspicions.

I'm not so sure....after April 19th, 1995 here in OKC the Feds got REAL interested in them.
You are correct that they were interested during the first couple years after OKC. But it's different today. Nowadays, LE couldn't care less (for the most part).

I'm just guessing there is a more or less permanent militia task force somewhere at the FBI is all.

But back on topic...what I think is creepy is that he got a visit at ALL.

The first rule of PATRIOT Act is you don't talk about PATRIOT Act...

Your guess is wrong.

There's got to be an anti-terrorism office/taskforce/branch/whatever, right? And there are *some* militias in this country that are less than wholesome...I don't work for the FBI, but it would only make sense.

Correct. But there is no task force strictly dedicated to "militias," which is what you stated.

And they do not investigate militias on a regular basis. They only investigate them if they have RAS that something illegal is going on.

Molon Labe, I'm beginning to think YOU are actually Agent Shmuckatelli
Schmuckatelli. There's two c's in it. In mall security, I worked closely with this top agent... saved my backside when the Rwandans wanted to celebrate Juneteenth their way...

im still reading the replies. I am pretty pissed off and being accused of lying, kind of like I was on the socnet forum, my respect for those guys has gone way down hill. When I was in the service I had nothing but good experiences however when you get online its a whole new world. Its very depressing to see this is how things are going.

Most of the comebacks here have been because my original post are not read carefully, so much for the high road after all.

Very sadden that I choose this group of people to share an event as it unfolded with. Thanks to those (the majority) who posted kind words and advice however.

I don't respect any of the "specops" kids who get together on the interweb to discuss their "missions" or whatever they talk about.
How many guys have been in harm's way? A lot? I've known some dudes way badder than me, and they never had to tell me.

Whether or not you were interrogated by the CIA, who cares? If I said I was abducted by alien butt beavers would anyone lose any sleep? I hope not.

To end this one and for all (god I hope) I have gone out of my way to upload a few pictures of myself and my IDs. I really hope this proves that the guys over at socnet had everything wrong and the picture they thought they posted of me was incorrect. I dont really even know why I bother defending myself anymore but I respect many people here and I dont want certain people spreading rumors and lies about me.

in the picture you can clearly see my class 2 CT pistol permit, my BEA permit, my DL, my Military ID, and my NRA instructor ID (for safe measure) The picture is taken ontop of the body armor that seems to have started the whole problem.

Jester - don't sweat it....

these folks don't know you - they know your screen name and pass judgement pretty quick.
