Police say officer shot, killed unarmed man
Resident advanced with hand in jacket, they say

An unarmed man was shot and killed by a Milwaukee police officer on the city's north side after refusing to take his hand out of his jacket, police said Saturday.

The man's family immediately called for an inquest.

Police said officers responded to a call about a violation of a restraining order at 8:45 p.m. Friday when they confronted Mannix Franklin Sr., 31, outside in the 7900 block of Fond du Lac Ave.

Authorities say Franklin walked away from the officers, who then followed him into the 8000 block of W. Medford Ave., where police say he tried to hide next to a vehicle parked in a driveway.

One of the police officers told Franklin to come out, and he did. Police said Franklin then put his hand inside his jacket and began to walk toward an officer, who told Franklin several times to stop and show his hands, police said.

As the officer backpedaled, Franklin continued to approach at a faster pace and appeared to be trying to take something out of his jacket, police said. Fearing for his safety, police said, the officer shot Franklin five times.

Franklin later died at Froedtert Memorial Lutheran Hospital in Wauwatosa.

The officer is 25 and has been on the force less than two years.

Family calls death avoidable
Franklin's family said they don't believe the department's story and insisted that the officer overreacted.

"They killed my husband - they killed him for nothing," said Marnice Franklin. "They were trigger-happy."

She said that she did not have a restraining order against her husband and that the couple lived together with their four children. Franklin said officers were called to the home, although she wouldn't say by whom or why they were called. She said there "wasn't any domestic violence."

Earlier this year, Mannix Franklin was charged with disorderly conduct and ordered to attend "a batterer's intervention program," court records show.

Saturday, Marnice Franklin said that her husband had been shot in the head, chest, both arms and in one of his legs.

As she talked of her husband, describing him as sweet, funny and romantic, her 8-year-old son approached and said he had found some of his father's blood on some leaves outside.

His mother fell silent and then said:

"He knew that when a cop comes near you, you don't have your hands in your pockets," she said of her husband.

The family says it will request an inquest.

"I want the truth to come out," Mannix Franklin's wife said. "I want justice to be done."

Suicide by cop?

things you'd like to hear......

"it was my husbands fault for not listening to the officer".........

"I don't know why my husband wouldn't take his hands out of his pocket".

"why did my husband keep walking.......faster towards that officer".........

"oh, I feel sorry for that officer, knowing that my husband forced him to do what he had to do"..........

Yeah, like this would ever happen.

describing him as sweet, funny and romantic,
I sincerely hope she remembers him as being this way instead of how stupid he was at the end.

I just don't know what to think about people who don't understand that looking down a gun muzzle is the Universal Stop Sign.

I wasn't there. I can't be sure of how it went down.

...but that cop better talk fast, if he wants to avoid a True Bill from the grand jury.

Lesson of the Day?

Take your damn hands out of your pockets when a cop (who is pointing a gun at you!) asks you to.

an unfortunate ending, but I don't see how one could reasonably expect the cop to not shoot a guy in that situation (assuming the true facts are as reported)
