Oh no! (Can non-corrosive ammo cause damage?)

OK, I admit it...I'm not very religious when it comes to cleaning my guns...And I've let them sit for a L-O-N-G time before cleaning. I rarely clean my .22 as it takes 40-50 shots to get accurate again(?)...So it gets cleaned every 500 rounds or so. Others usually get cleaned withing a few days of shooting (although I'll USUALLY clean within 24 hours).

NOW, when I first got into milsurps, I had never heard of "corrosive" ammo...so I cleaned them the same way I did all my guns (still do)...many are several years old, and have been shot plenty, and I've yet to see any real problems with them.

In short, I think people that are "paranoid" about the effects of "corrosive" ammo, need to take a step back, and not worrry quite so much!

ug, gunzilla.

Cleans like the dickens, but the odor from the "odorless" solvent makes me nauseous.

AN HOUR OF INTENSIVE CLEANING FOR A MOSIN-NAGANT?!?!? what are you, OCD?

Mildly, yes :p

I like my bores clean. Surplus 54R, besides being corrosive, also leaves enough crud in my barrels that an hour is usually when I give up, say "good enough" and rack the damn thing.

Maybe I just didn't clean well enough when I got 'em and they're still shooting out old cosmo from the grooves, I dunno. Bugs me either way.

I clean any gun as soon as reasonably possible after firing it. It just makes sense to me to maintain any piece of mechanical equipment in the best possible operating condition.
Now with my Mosin, I've been using a solution of mild detergent in HOT water with about a dozen patches for the first cleaning passes. I pour the solution through the barrel after each patch, and alternate muzzle/chamber passes. Then I use good ole Hoppes after blowing all the water out of the bore. It'll take a LOT of patches to clean up after firing yellow-tip surplus ammo, that stuff is about the dirtiest, sootiest ammo ever made! I fired about 250 rounds yesterday, and the deposits were almost like something from the black powder era towards the end. The recoil was almost insane, even for a Mosin.
