Eric Fingerhut, Democrat from Cleveland is introducing legislation to ban "assault weapons" here in Ohio....because as he says the ban is going to sunset so we need to outlaw these dangerous guns.

Couldn't let that go so I fired off a letter. Here tis:

Senator Fingerhut,

Having recently heard your plans to introduce legislation for the ban on assault weapons in Ohio, I am writing to compliment you on introducing a ban on a type of weapon already restricted from private ownership in Ohio (and all the other 49 states). Well done. Care to ban murder while you're at it?

Assault weapons. What are they?

According to Jane's Defense are: any of various automatic rifles designed for military use with large capacity magazines

These weapons are currently prohibited by the Gun Control Act of 1968. I as a citizen of Ohio may not currently purchase these weapons. Semi automatic weapons, such as commercial AR-15's, Springfield M1A's or M1 Garands, all of which are used by thousands of shooters every year to compete in service rifle competition in your back yard at the Camp Perry National Matches, are perfectly legal and should remain so. The only difference between an AR-15 and a Browning BAR hunting rifle are cosmetic features - which I assume to you makes them more deadly? Wood = good. Black plastic = bad? This is very confusing. As it turns out, the Browning hunting rifle that would probably remain legal has more power, more range and can penetrate ballistic armor. Sounds kind of dangerous to me....yet you would leave this gun alone and ban the AR-15? Do you understand what you're doing? I do.

The CDC's recent study has shown the so called "assault weapon ban" of 1994 to be inneffective in reducing crime, so I must ask what your reason would be to reintroduce this ban? Would you enact useless legislation for your own enjoyment, to strip law abiding sporting gun owners such as myself the joy of owning and competing with semi automatic rifles, or just because you're terrible at your job? Either way, I will continue to fight this horrible knee-jerk legislation and people who attempt to subvert common sense with meaningless laws which rob the free and give power to the criminal.

Sincerely,

Uhh... wouldn't that be the Firearms Owners Protection (cough) Act of 1986? If I recall the GCA prohibits the importation of fully automatic weapons, but it wasn't until 1986 that the sale of domestically manufactured (or converted?) full-autos was prohibited (i.e. no new sales to non-LEO civilians). You might also point out the number of murders committed with legally owned assault weapons since 1934 (that is, NFA registered full-auto rifles; I believe the number is 0*).

* I'm told there was a murder comitted with a legally owned MAC11 (by a LEO no less), but a MAC11 is, of course, not an assault weapon by Jane's definition.

Yup, and they are trying it here in MD with the same same justification.

Thank goodness we have a Republican (in MD!) Governor who at least seems likely to veto it, should it get passed by the leftist legislature.
