LAS VEGAS, Nev. - Police on Wednesday captured a 28-year-old man who they believe may be the elusive gunman linked to two dozen highway shootings around Columbus, Ohio, that have terrorized area motorists for months.
Charles A. McCoy Jr., was arrested at a Budget Suites Hotel, near the Stardust Casino in Las Vegas.
“We got him in custody without incident,†said Las Vegas police Lt. Christopher Van Cleef.
Police were told of McCoy’s whereabouts by a person who recognized him from media reports linking him to the Ohio shootings, Van Cleef said.
“He wasn’t armed, but we haven’t been in the motel room or his vehicle yet,†Van Cleef said. He said police have impounded a 1999 Geo Metro that McCoy was driving.
Family 'greatly relieved'
“I knew it would happen without incident because he was a very passive individual,†McCoy’s sister Amy Walton said on NBC’s “Today†show. “This came as a great shock to our family.â€
Walton said the family was "greatly relieved" that no one was harmed when her brother was apprehended. When asked what she would say to her brother, Walton said, “We can’t wait to talk to you. Everything will be OK.â€
FBI special agent Todd Palmer said McCoy is being processed in the agency’s office and likely will be transferred to the U.S. attorney’s office in Columbus.
An earlier bulletin from investigators to other police departments said McCoy was believed to have a semiautomatic pistol and ammunition.
“McCoy has had mental health issues in the past and is currently not on medication,†the notification read. “He is believed to have suicidal or homicidal tendencies.â€
Near Columbus
McCoy lived within miles of where the gunman’s bullets killed a passenger, shattered windshields, dented school buses and drilled into homes and a school over the past few months. One woman has been killed in the shootings.
In the three most recent shootings, witnesses described seeing someone aiming at them while standing next to a car. Their descriptions of the man and the car were similar to information the sheriff’s office released Monday.
McCoy is 5-feet 8-inches tall, weighs 185 pounds and has brown hair and green eyes, the sheriff’s office said. His car is a dark green 1999 Chevrolet Geo Metro with a black hood.
McCoy’s mother, who lives with her son, filed a missing person report with Columbus police Monday, saying she had not seen her son since Friday.
She said he was upset over a possible move and withdrew $600 from a bank account, saying he was going to a restaurant-bar known for its array of video games.
Arrest warrant
Investigators filed an arrest warrant Monday night for McCoy on a charge of felonious assault in one of the shootings, which damaged a house Dec. 15.
Since May, two dozen sniper shootings have targeted vehicles and buildings around Interstate 270, which circles Columbus, and other nearby highways. Most of the shootings have occurred since October; the latest was on Feb. 14.
Chief Deputy Steve Martin would not say what evidence led investigators to McCoy, but The Columbus Dispatch, citing sources it did not identify, reported Tuesday that the suspect’s father, Charles A. McCoy, Sr., gave authorities two of his son’s 9 mm Beretta guns and ammunition Friday.
One of the guns proved to be a ballistic match to bullet fragments found at the scenes of nine of the shootings, the newspaper quoted the sources as saying.
Neighbor drove alternate routes
Neighbors gathered in disbelief Monday on the Columbus street where McCoy lived with his mother.
Several neighbors said they recognized McCoy from a photo released by investigators, although they barely knew him.
“I even drove other ways to avoid being in the area where most of the shootings happened, and now I find out that the suspect lives right across the street from me,†said Nicole Sewald, whose son attends an elementary school that was struck one night by the shooter.
Bullets struck homes, school buses, vans, cars, delivery trucks and tractor-trailers. The only person to be hit, Gail Knisley, 62, was fatally wounded Nov. 25 while riding in a car on I-270.
The warrant charges McCoy with firing two rounds from a 9 mm handgun into an occupied residence near I-270. Authorities had not previously identified the type of gun used in the shootings.
A light was on in the McCoys’ split-level house, but the curtains were drawn, and no one answered the door. A real estate agent briefly drove up to remove a “for sale†sign from in front of the house.
“I think my husband said once that they were having trouble selling the house because of the shootings in the area,†Sewald said.
The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Why do they always seem to come here?

edited to add... Mods. Duplicate to what 7.62 posted in the earlier thread. He obviously gets up earlier than I do. Kill it.
