Check this out. Its a complete carbine stock kit and its on sale. Everything you need in one kit. You can find these complete kits in other more expensive kits as well. This is just a run of the mill 6 position stock
I know magpul makes some kits for around $100-150.

Youll also need an AR15 armorers wrench to tighten the castle nut on the carbine stock. Watch some youtube videos on how to do this. I think brownells and midwayusa both have videos on changing out stocks on AR's. There is a rear detent spring held in by the stock. Its not hard to do. Please email me if you have any other questions. [email protected]

Magpul has a fixed Carbine stock that is considerably shorter than your rifle stock, it requires all carbine parts: receiver ext., castle nut, end plate, buffer and spring. They also have a buttpad if that stock is too short, adds about half inch to the carbine stock.

For me in this case.

My favorite option is to put an A-1 or even pre-A1 with no trap door.

Same receiver extension, shorter butt screw. You end up somewhere around 5/8 inch shorter but it feels like more of a reduction than that as your butt's edge is radiused getting rid of the 90 shoulder of the A-2 butt.

Feels shorter and slimmer.

You can also just put the A-1/preA-1 butt on your stock for the radius.

Todd.

Just buy another complete lower with collapsable stock. Then later you will "need" a 16" upper to go with it.

I like Todd's idea of simply swapping the A2 for an A1. If she's really short just get a complete lower with carbine stock and not worry with taking stuff apart and assembly. Prices are in the tank right now. It's not like you're going to wake up one day and wish you only had one lower vs two.

Ibmikey mentioned the fixed carbine stock. I have one on my rifle and I really like it. It feels solid. Adjustable carbine stocks "rattle" around when you move the gun.

Another thing, if you're going to put on an end plate, might as well spend a few extra dollars and get one that has a sling attachment point, just in case you ever decide you want a single point sling. I have one of these, like it because it's very low profile:

Edited to add:

Another good upgrade is the Magpul hand guard. You can get one from IWC that has an added sling attachment point, which is what I did. Check this out:

Just make sure you get the right length (I'm guessing yours is a rifle length)

I have four ARs in four calibers. Two of them have A2 stocks on them. They work quite well. No need to get in a hurry about changing anything. Give it a test drive for awhile.

thanks everybody, i talked to the guy i got the ar from and told him what i was talking about doing and he says "are you going to be home tomorrow?" i said yes he showed up with a new buffer buffer spring and all the parts needed to put on a adjustable stock on,,, the he whips a magpul adj stock out of his bag and put it on... im thinking im going to have to bust into the emergency money for this bill ... i asked what i owe him he says Nothing at all he likes doing this and building them AND getting other suckers eeerrr i mean people hooked on the ar's lol..... so before he left i took him out to my shop (i fix and sell boats) so anyway i loaded him up with a new life jacket for his 4yo son and a nice anchor and about 50 feet of new anchor rope, he was happy and i was so all is well.... :)

thanks for all the help

When both parties feel they got a good deal, then it really was a good deal!

As an aside, I personally (and many others I know) feel that a standard size carbine stock looks a little wonky on a 20" gun, so if I may make a recommendation in case you feel the same:

The ACS or ACS-L are a bit longer than a standard M4 style stock, including the MOE, CTR, B5 and others, so they don't look quite so out of place on a longer rifle. They won't collapse to the last position on account of their length, but can still be shorter (or longer) than an A2 stock. They also have a very comfortable cheek rest, plus storage compartments and QD sling points.

Great! A boat guy gets his hooks into a gun guy (vice versa?) in horse trading.
Now all you guys need to do is get a motorcycle guy and an old truck guy in the mix to really set your gals in a tizzy.

Lots of: "But sweety, didn't cost a thing... It was a trade!"

Seen that movie.

Aside from a bit of weight - you're gonna dig the Magpul.

Todd.

I second the Magpul ACS stoc recommendation. I have one on my latest AR and absolutely love it...and as a bonus, it's much more stable feeling than a standard carbine collapsible stock thanks to the friction lock feature.
