As I advance in years I'm looking to add a few more guns to the "collection." And I want them to be just like me: old(er) and under rated.

I've got a couple of plastic shooters (all S&W...Shield, SW990L and SD9) and that's enough of those: and a bunch of old school steel (and alloy) Smiths, Berettas; and my absolute favorite: a BPH that was customized for me.

So I need something in steel or alloy to look for when I drop by my LGSs and look online. Sort of gives me a reason to window shop. I "discovered" Stars with the help of a great guy at Wash. Arms Collectors and now have a few nice ones plus 2 Astras (all sweet shooters and I hope they never break); I've got a P38/P1 and a Sig.

Anyone have any suggestions for what's next in the new year? I'd like to stay with 9mm pistol, but .38 special isn't out of the question. I don't need a carry gun, big ole full sized pistols are great for the range. And as it's gonna take me a month or three to recover from Christmas and I want to see if "Uncle" owes me any $$$$, I'm not in any hurry to buy something tomorrow. But it can't hurt to look. Right. Of course right.

You mean you have Benign Prostatic Hypertrophy that was designed just for you? Wow! I did not know they could do that.

A Luger or P38?

I guess they're not underrated, though.

I assume one of your Stars is a Super B? They are still inexpensive.

A Polish Radon would be more expensive.

The Tokarev is an old design, anyway. Newer models in 9mm are cheap and easy to find.

Let us know what you get! :)

S&W 3rd Generation .... lot to chose from. I prefer those models that are DAO & without a safe.

I trust you mean BHP, as in Browning Hi-Power; one of my all-time favorites too! Some decent 9mm.s that come to mind are: CZ 75, Beretta Model 92, Taurus PT92, SIG P226 and P228, HK P7 and P9, and any number of 1911 pistols.

An old S&W .38 spl K frame target revolver is always good to find. I just found a really nice all original S&W Model 14 at a good price.

When I read the title I knew people would recommend the 3rd gen Smiths.

I still think the HK P7M8 is under-rated. The squeeze-cocking mechanism was genius. I can get mine into action very quickly, it has a light SA trigger pull and it completely solves the issues of DA/SA, DOA, manual safety, spongy striker-fired trigger issues.

Stoeger Cougar in 9mm. Very well priced and reliable as the sunrise . All metal gun with the rotating barrel lock-up system.

How about a CZ 82 or a CZ 83 in 9mm Mak (I know you probably meant 9x19, but 9x18 is 9mm too)...

And since you did bring up .38spl, if you don't have one, you ought to get a S&W M10, Taurus 82, or any number of Colts (far from underrated, but terrific old-school guns).

Another vote here for the old 3rd generation S&W's (but they seem to be really catching on again the last couple years, so they might not quite fit the criteria of "under-rated", though they can often still be found a good hundred bucks or so cheaper than most popular, modern semi-autos, that really aren't any "better").

The Luger is the oldest 9mm and certainly is underrated by many performance wise. As a range gun they're a lot of fun and draw a crowd! A "shooter" that doesn't have high collector status can be found under $1000.

Also, when you discuss classic old 9mms you have to think Hi Power.

I have a re-blued 1941 Mauser P-08 Luger that came back through Russia in the early 90's, and is a fantastic shooter, and utterly reliable with ALL ammo including my reloads, modern hollow point, cast lead, etc. It is very accurate also. I wouldn't hate to use it for HD/SD in a pinch. I

Most all my suggestions have been made. You mentioned the Star pistols; if you don't have the BM model, they are similar in size to the 1911 commander model. I had one and still mildly regret selling it.

Not long ago I would say three and four digit model number S&W metal framed pistols, but looking at used prices I would have to say they became quite appreciated by now. My pick would be older import South Korean Daewoos. Those easily equal S&W in quality plus function and when found on second hand market cost $300 or less.

I have a Taurus 92F or something I bought 32 years ago, has been a great gun SA/DA
