Old british bulldog revolver

it might help to know what calibre it's in and what you want for it
Oh Yes! I guess that would help... I am not a gun person! the revolver holds 5 bullets and it has a u engraved under a crown. E L G or E L C is also engraved on it British Bulldog is engraved at the top of the revolver. I have no idea what this may be worth? any ideas??? Thanks...
sounds like a copy made in Belgium in Leige (ELG)
what little i know is that they were produced in .38, .44 and .455 chamberings
they originally sold for $3...but that was back in 1892
a quick search showed a value of $50-$70 as they were sold as cheap personal defense pistols...Saturday Night Specials...and don't have the collectibility of their British brethren and it's almost impossible to find ammo for them
Custer was said to have carried a set, a gift from a british admirer, into the Battle of the Little Big Horn...can you imagine what one might be worth?

I don't think you can do a private sale under CA law, but you can check. If not, the only way to legally sell it would be to a dealer and I doubt very much any dealer will take it, even in trade. Since those guns were made throughout the late 19th and early 20th centuries, yours might or might not be an antique (pre-1899) under federal law.
The trouble is that those guns have little or no collector interest (though the English-made guns do), and are valued at less than $100 even in top condition. Since they are old and of little value, dealers don't consider them worth the paperwork required to buy or sell them.
You might consider using it as a decorator/wall hanger of some kind. In some decor, an old gun in a shadow box makes a nice addition.

The Garfield connection would be interesting only if the gun were the same exact model as that used by his assassin. Unfortunately, there were dozens of different model guns called "Bulldog" or "British Bulldog", made in the U.S., England, and Belgium. The only things they had in common were a large caliber, short barrel and a similarity of grip. Most are of little value, and $300 would be a very high price to pay, especially sight unseen.

I agree 300 seemed pretty high considering the the way the gun on GB looked. info I got was on wikapedia so take it for what its worth. my cousin has one that completely shot and i offered him 10 bucks for it just to be nice and make it a wall hanger.
the would be very few older guns that wouldn't be worth $10-20 as a wall hanger...just because it's "different"
Just FWIW, in the 1960's, a fellow in Alexandria, VA sold decorator antique guns in shadow boxes lined with velvet. He usually charged $300 or more, and did a good business.
When he ran out of his "antique" guns, he drove down the street to Interarms and picked up some more old rolling block rifles for $5.50.
