Well here is the promised picture of the 98 Marlin , it actually was made in 1900 and is in the middle of the run of them from 97-1904. It came out pretty silver looking after a bronze woollings , detail strip and lubeing. It works! I fired 2 black powder shells then recleaned the mirror bore barrel. It produced a nice 18" pattern at 60 feet with the #6 shot and was about 6" above aiming point.
I put it in the sun with my other pre WW2 (old ) SGs. Left to right;
1916 Browning Bros Ogden 12ga 32" barrel A-5 which was in use by relative since bought new, but not used that much just a ritual duck hunt by an uncle once a year. I rebuilt it 25 years ago.Shoots real good and I have it adjusted for real light trap loads.
The Model 98 Marlin 12ga 30" with some choke but not that much, the barrel is real thick too, nobody reamed out this baby. VERY slick action reminds me of a Colt Lightning pump!SASS here it comes!
16 ga. 1897 Winchester with 28" mod. choke, I had the forcing cone lengthened for 2 3/4" shells and the choke adjusted to a loose modified. Is a nice retro bird gun. 1934 made and it is a smaller action than a 12ga!.
Speaking about nice retro bird gun this 1939 Remington 16ga Model 31with a 26" Modified choke "Ball Bearing Corn Shucker" lives up to it's name and is in 90%+ with it's factory 2 3/4 chamber. They used to scale down the action size for each guage!
Prolly the fanciest of the bunch is this 1940 Ithaca Nitro Special 20ga. SxS, 28" Modified and Imp cyl , but both chokes are on the tight side of those ratings. I have only shot some quail with it since I got it a couple years ago.Fits me like an old glove.
Very rare Harrington and Richardson FOLDING .410 ! It is a tiny little gun with a 20" "choked" barrel in 98%- safe queen!

WARNING I pulled the rubber slip on pads off the Browning and 1897 - OFF came the stock finish! Leather slip ons don't do this!

sweet guns man... I hope to get my hands on an original 97 eventually... Just love the look and feel of them... for now I will just have to be happy with my norinco clone.

really nice collection you have there... I am a bit jealous.
