Hi all, I was at the Houston gun show today and came across a mint Smith & Wesson model 12-3 with a thin 4" barrel (round grip). The finish is so nice on those old guns, and the slim grip fits my hand perfectly. I paid $294 total for it. The serial number is 389XX. Any ideas as to the year of manufacture? Thanks.

The gun show at the Reliant Park was absolutely huge!!! I was tempted to pick up a Norinco M1897 for $350, but passed. The CMP folks were also there today, offering a huge selection of M-1 Garands, 1903s and 22 training rifles. I don't think there are any eligibility requirements if you buy their rifles at the show.

The 12-3 was produced from 1977-1984. If it's got a pinned barrel, it would be 77-82. The serial # you give doesn't jive. Look on the grip frame. It should be a mix of letters & Numbers .In this case probobly a "D" in the second or third place.
Sounds like a nice piece and a V good price. Enjoy it.

Thanks for your reply Tacoma. You're right that the serial number is on the bottom of the grip: 9D554XX. This specimen isn't pinned. I've got a real weakness for these old 38 Special revolvers (also have a model 10, 15, 36 and 37). With that glossy blued finish, I simply couldn't resist.
