Older Browning Scope Mount Issues.

I am having some scope mount issues with my Browning High Power. It's a .308 Safari grade with a Sako action. I think back when I did research on it it was made in 1964 or 1969. This is what the scope mount looks like on a similar rifle...

There is a rail that screws to the top of the gun and the scope rings mount to the top of the rail. The rear ring is clamped in place by two screws on the rail. The metal on the rear ring where the screws clamp it in place has worn out over the years and now no matter how tight the screws are the ring will not hold steady. So I can't sight the gun in because the ring wants to work itself out after a few shots and shift the entire scope. I would like to replace the whole mounting setup, but I can't figure out how to get the forward scope ring off the bar. It's covers the screws that hold the bar to the gun and I have to get the forward ring off to get the bar off. So does anyone have any idea how the front ring comes off and where I can find a replacement mounting setup that will fit? I would really like to find something where both rings screw to the gun so this doesn't happen again. Thanks.

It may be a twist base ring, one that goes in at 90 degrees and then twists in to lock. I can't see enough of the pics to really see.

I think Dryhumor is right. Put a dowel through the ring and try to twist it off.

I did some poking around on the net and I think it's a Redfield base and ring set. They are still available. Opticsplanet has them.

The base may be a .264 thru .458 FN Mauser Action part number 47154.

You guys were exactly right. The ring twisted right off. I didn't even know they made rings like that. Thank you guys so much for the help. I'm gonna start shopping around to see if I can find a new mounting setup without the bar base and clamping screws. I don't care for the twist in and clamped in mount. I like rings that screw right into the top of the action so you know its not gonna be moving around. Anybody have any idea where I could find somthing like that that would fit this old Browning? So there's no other option besides the original Redfield base and ring setup?

Weaver bases 72 (48072) rear and 71 (48071) front. Pick any rings you want for a Weaver mount.

There's nothing wrong with the type of base and rings you have. IMHO, they look better on a classic gun like the one you have. I have that setup on my 1977 Browning BLR. If you don't want Redfield, you can go Leupold. The one piece Leupold base is 49988 (gloss). The two piece setup is 50025 (gloss) or 50026 (matte).

They are all I use anymore on hunting rifles. If you are uncertain as to what you need, describe the rifle, measure center to center of the mount holes, and use the contact form on the site.

They also have bases that are uncataloged, and in some cases work on several actions.

I think I'll just get a new set of the Redfield rings. I read in an article online that the type i have can wear out if theyre taken off and put back on a lot. Since the gun is twice as old as me a new set probably wouldn't hurt at all. Thanks again for the info.
