teddkt: Assuming you have a S&W manufactured revolver (it should have a large S&W trademark stamped on the side plate), then you have a .38 Military & Police Model of 1905 - 3rd change. These are a variation on the K frame revolver that was introduced in 1899 as the Army & Navy revolver and is still made today as the models 10, 14, 64 & 67 in .38 special and as the models 617, 17 & 18 in .22lr.
The model number refers to engineering changes. Major changes were made in 1902 (second model) & 1905 (3rd model). Minor changes were made in 1906 (Model of 1905 - first change & model of 1905 - second change) & in 1909 (model of 1905 -3rd change). Today S&W refer to models by number & engineering changes by adding a dash and a number after the model number. So the model 10 which replaced the Military & Police designation in 1957 was up to model 10-14 in 2002.
Your gun was made in a serial number range from 146900 to 241703 with 94803 manufactured between 1909 & 1915.
