I received a .38 S&W special CTG Model 14-3 from a family friend and was wondering if anyone can tell me some information about the year and possibly where to find its worth.

The Serial number is 8K76011
Model 14-3

It has a 8 3/8 inch long barrell.

Thanks,

T.J.

That's a fine revolver. The Model 14, also known as the K-38 Target Masterpiece, was S&W's standard for revolver target shooting for many years. Yours is chambered for the .38 Special cartridge, which was developed by Smith & Wesson, so they mark guns chambered for it ".38 S&W Special CTG".

It's a great firearm and you should treasure it (or sell it to me for $250 ;))

To find it's worth, the first step is to get an accurate estimate of it's condition. You can read about how to do that in most valuation books. The definitive valuation source is the Standard Catalog of S&W by Supica & Nahaas. The data is their is from 2006, prices went up quite a bit in 2007, but came down some in 2008 for the most part (this price trend is about S&W revolvers - other guns and types have been different). If you post detailed photos here, you may get some advice. The range would be $250 (good) to $700 (ANIB) based on condition, pretty much. Brian Williams is correct about the range for better models.
