What's a reasonable price for a Sig 226 in decent condition marked "made in W. Germany"?

A local shop has one for sale for $495 and I have no idea anymore if that is a decent price or not. I used to have a W. German made 226 years ago but for the life of me I can't recall what I paid for it. All I know is I loved the one I had before and its one of those guns I don't know why I ever sold, I must have been desperate for money at the time.

Should I buy this gun at $495 or should I try and negotiate a more reasonable price?

If it is in good to excellent condition with no damage to the slide or frame and no rust or pitting, I'd say this is a fair price. These pistols are workhorses and unless it was abused, I'd say it would probably still shoot tight groups. Depending on it's condition and how it shoots, new springs may not be a bad idea once you've worked with the pistol enough to determine if it needs anything done to it.

Of course, if it has magazines or any accessories with it, the deal is that much sweeter. For a good West German P226, the price they ask is certainly fair.

I just got finished researching 226s and 229s (purchased a used 229 Elite).

Gun show specs for a newer CPO 226 was about $530-550 + tax in Texas. Store prices were much higher. The only W German model 226 I was offered was from sigforum (oregon seller), and it was going for $525 with 5 mags in very nice condition before discussing the price in detail.

Depending on sales tax in your state and the condition of the gun, I agree it sounds like a fair price -- not a steal, but good for not having to dig around for a gun anymore!
