So i know next to nothing about ARs but i stumbled across an Olympic arms 10mm carbine for $499. It has Multi Caliber stamped on the lower, a full non adjustable stock and i believe a 10:barf: rd mag with the block. Its in great shape, but i need a bit of info before i buy.

Is this a good deal?

How are the 10mm ARs? Any feeding problems?

Since its a Multi Caliber lower couldnt i convert it to anything other than the 308 family and longer than 223 rounds? Arent all lowers like this?
 
I haven't heard about their multi-caliber ARs, but Olympic can be really hit or miss in terms of quality. Tread cautiously.
 
I dont know about the OP's plans for it, but just about any PCC is going to be for shooting at paper only. I dont demand 100% reliability out of plinkers (if I did, I would have probably broke my GSG5 over my leg by now).

However, if you decide you want to use it for HD I've got an AR45 built with a CNCGuns lower and and an olympic upper. Its ran flawlessly so far, my only complaint being it has an A1 front sight post. If you look in the pistol caliber section at arfcom you'll find that most oly owners are happy, despite the loose tolerances and slightly better fit and finish than the trained monkeys at CAI can get on their AKs.

I havent been in the gun stores lately, but i would have to say its a pretty good deal. Before the election panic buying spree I think oly PCCs were about $650. I paid about the same for my .45 ACP upper that was backordered for 6 months...

Oly has their own polymer .45 ACP and 10mm magazines (18 and 20 round respectively) if you live in a free state. They cost about $45 each IIRC. If you decide to go with oly mags, make sure the mag block isnt pinned in place before you try to take it out.

Yes, you can convert it to whatever caliber AR15 upper you can get for it. For future reference, even though the lower is marked .223 rem or 5.56 NATO for most ARs, you can convert them as well. My .22 and 9mm both have .223/5.56 stamped lowers.

Like "For Government/LEO use only" markings on mags, "multi-caliber" marked on the side of an AR lower means nothing (legally). "Pistol" marked lowers are another FUD-driven item (a "pistol" marking on an AR lower legally means nothing).
 
Hmm, it seems like its in good shape, but like i said im not a big AR guy, i might have to drag my father to the gun shop as he at least used the system in the army.

So basically most of the pistol calibered ARs are unreliable? or is it just Olympic i have to watch out for.

As for use, ive been kinda looking around for something EBR-ish and have been stumbling across some decent deals lately. I was sort of looking for something in a FAL, but while i have seen a thumbhole stocked century FAL for the same price, there really isnt much around me unless i want to spend about 3 times what the 10mm is. I do live in the woods so it is kinda nice to have another black bear worthy caliber laying around, and both the 308 and 10mm are with the 308 being much much better obviously.
 
Complete lowers run from 70-200 bucks depending on quality.

Spikes, S&W, DD, BCM, and Noveske are the lowers I tend to use.
 
Out of curiosity how do Olympic lowers rate in the grand scheme of things?

If i do get this ill probably try a couple different uppers, and it seems that the 10mm isnt one of the cheaper ive found, so in this case it seems that getting this and trying different uppers would be cheaper than getting a standard 223 complete AR and modding from there.

Second worst possible company you can get AR parts from. The only one I know of that is worse is Hesse/Blackthorne/Vulcan.


There are horror stories all over the place about Oly arms. Seems like the general opinion is that the only thing worse than their gun parts is their Customer service.

Yeah you will find one or two people who will defend them. But their reputation speaks for itself.

There is a thread somewhere on ARF.com about it. Pretty sure it is in the archives now. But it details a number of the horror stories from individuals and dealers both.
 
I have to agree with Azizza, pass.

I you want a 10mm (who doesn't), maybe look into the pistol platform. At least your $500 would be well spent.
 
$500 for a complete 10mm AR is a fair enough deal. I literally just pushed the send button on an order for one of their 10mm uppers for $670. Should be here later this week.

Really hot 10mm loads are a blast in the AR platform. It's a less anemic version of a 9mm AR. :)

What you likely see there is one of the older Olympic offerings that use modified grease gun or some other kind of steel mag like a Sten, or some such. That's fine and good if it comes with enough mags to suit your needs. If not, you're going to get held up for additional mags. Like really held up. Enough so that if you need more than a few, you'd likely be better off going a different route.

Olympic recently redesigned their pistol caliber ARs to use their own polymer mags. The 18 rounder for 10mm runs about $45 retail. Compare to modified steel mags that are very hard to find and often sell for well over $100.

Midway currently has the 10mm uppers and extree mags in stock. Others may too.

See this is why im still kinda thinking about it, the entire gun is less than getting an upper, so if i ever did want a 10mm down the road i would be paying much more. Plus id be getting a lower that i could convert to whatever else id like to try like the 50 Beowulf.

But it only comes with the one 10rd mag, and 45 bucks a mag is very expensive, not to mention ive read that the new mags dont always work with the older guns.
 
Antihero, where is it located? Let me know if you decide to pass on it. I've been wanting to build one for a few years now. That price is a few hundred under what you could built one for.
 
So i decided to go into that pawn shop again and see if they still had it. They did and long story short i ended up getting it for $390, which is too good of a deal to pass up IMO,so i have a 10mm AR now.

I was able to fire off 2 mags before it got to dark to see, the 10rd mag it came with has quite possibly the heaviest spring ive ever been around and only takes 9rds, but all 18 fed and fired without a hitch, hopefully this will continue.

Glad you got a good deal on that 10mm. I would have bought it at that price, for sure.

Take a look at Olympic Arm's website. They have new mags for their pistol caliber carbines that don't require any mag blocks or anything.

I have both a Colt and an Oly AR15. The oly has the same reciever as yours, stamped multi, but rifle is chambered in 5.56. The Colt stays in the safe most of the time, the Oly takes all the punishment I can give it and has not let me down. I'd say you made a good buy.

While i dont despise Olympic, in fact im liking them more and more, at that price i was willing to give it a go even if all the naysayers were correct. Heck its less than a lot of uppers ive seen.

Ive fired 100rds thru it so far without a hiccup or a problem. Accuracy is good,especially since ive never fred an AR before now and find them a bit different than the average rifle.
