I've been looking at various surplus ammo pages, and I have seen that all the surplus 7.62x54 ammo is corrosive. I'm not sure what exactly this does to the gun's barrel, but I assume it's not good, correct? I found this Olympic stuff at http://ammunitionstore.com/ and I was wondering if anyone has any thoughts about it. It seems to be good ammo, but is it worth paying twice as much money? Am I better off just going with cheap surplus?

Forgot to mention, the price of this ammo is as follows

$4.95 - 20 rnd box
$44.95 - 200 rnds
$85.95 - 400 rnds

As long as you're willing to clean your rifle promptly after shooting with a water-based solvent, corrosive surplus ammo can be fired without hurting your rifle's bore. In fact, all that is really needed is to ****** out the bore and bolt with Windex, or even just hot water, at the range, followed by a normal cleaning at home the same day. The corrosion caused by surplus ammo is due to the mil-spec primers depositing a potassium salt in the bore when fired - the salt attracts water vapor from the air, and if it sits there too long it will cause rust. How long is too long will depend on your climate - it seldom if ever causes a problem here in S. AZ except during monsoon season, or if the rifles are stored in a structure cooled by evaporative cooling.

If you were shooting a semi-auto 7.62X54R rifle, like a Tokarev or "Romanian Dragunov," I'd recommend the non-corrosive Olympic or Wolf ammo, just so you wouldn't have to clean the gas system as well as the bore. Otherwise, as far as Mosin-Nagant bolt-rifles go, it's cheaper and easier to shoot corrosive surplus and clean afterwards.

ive tried it and brass case or not, its poor ammo. Accuracy is bad, and it makes the bolt sticky. Its much easier to use wolf or decent surplus. The brass is berdan primed anyway, so there is no benefit to it.

I would get corrosive surplus before bothering with Olympic again. It's the only ammo I have ever had to bother to return the unused portion to Miwall Ammo. :barf:

I've only used it in my 8mm but I thought it shot quite well. Tried to find it again but was unable to buy it in bulk because they were out of it every where I looked.

Thanks for all the replies guys. Alright, I guess I'll just stock up on some czech surplus and spend the rest of my money on windex. :)
