OMG! Shipping Costs

I have an FMK I'm sending back to the factory for repair (minor trigger work), UPS from So. Oregon to So. CA, over night (required by UPS for handgun) cost me $134.63. I only signed up for $200 insurance and Signature Required ($7.50). FMK Customer service requested UPS, so I happily packed my gun took it to the UPS store and nearly fainted when I was quoted a price, and luckily I had my credit card with me! The clerk helped as much as she could to find a less expensive shipping (original cost was over $150.00). I don't foresee me shipping a firearm in the future...
After shipping a flintlock rifle a while back that cost me $125 at FedEx, $10 cheaper than UPS I discovered Shippo. Had to create a free account but it cut my shipping in half or more and UPS through them is the cheapest. I just shipped out a Pedersoli Kentucky longrifle that I built and it only cost me $35 insured for the full price.

Did you read this? https://www.ups.com/us/en/support/s...egulated-items/prohibited-items/firearms.page

If lost, stolen or damaged you're screwed because you violated the UPS terms of service.

That "legal speak" may prevent you from violating federal law.
Seriously, next time start a thread and ask or just read the sticky on shipping firearms:https://www.thehighroad.org/index.php?threads/how-to-ship-firearms.651375/
USPS claim is strict! I got denied twice, one for deadline in filling and the other for not keeping all the original packaging including the postal box

Yeah but because it's a firearm, they all have to go overnight. The shippers do this because some of their employees have sticky fingers.

Has nothing to do with being overnight. As I said before and others agree, if you could just send the part to be fixed, it would save you a lot of money. Sometimes you can do it, I'm not sure what they told the OP about the trigger.

I know on polymer frames like the Sig's, the trigger housing has the serial number on it. You could pull it out and just send that in instead of the whole pistol. That is if the factory doesn't need the rest of the pistol.
They don't have to go overnight. I just shipped 22 firearms through ups. $395. 3 day.

Mk-211 was referring to handguns and is correct, UPS requires handguns to go Next Day (FedEx uses "Overnight" terminology)

If you shipped UPS using anything other than a Next Day level of service you did so in violation of their policies. If's not illegal, but they can and do deny claims for loss, damage or theft when a shipper ignores their policies or tariffs.

Ok, well 15 of the 22 firearms were handguns. . Shipped from ffl on Thursday, received on Tuesday of this last week. So they are in violation?

Are you a licensed dealer? If not, using that USPS Flat Rate box for shipping handguns, receivers, frames, etc is a violation of federal law.
Nonlicensees are only permitted to ship a rifle or shotgun via USPS.

The thread title does not say firearms shipping, and shipping costs in general are rising.

Other than firearms or receivers with serial numbers, FLAT rate. Sorry, I'm not suggesting breaking statues, or bending other policy. Think mags, reloading equip. and other items. I've been spending too much time on other sites where half the posts veer off topic. Yikes.

Ruger and American Tactical both supplied me with FedEx labels for warranty repair work, Century Arms had me pay for my Mete shipping which was $19 or $21 choices for two day ground, plus a couple dollars for $500 insurance. The Canik was just done in January.

Yep.
Being an FFL doesn't change UPS tariffs. Thats why most dealers will ship handguns via USPS. High volume shippers that use UPS dont pay the same Next Day rates that I would.

Yet this is a firearms forum, topics must be firearms related, the OP discusses the cost of shipping his handgun.....so it ain't about how expensive it is to ship anything else.

Why is that?:D

As others have said, handguns can only be shipped by non-ffl via UPS overnight/Next Day Air services from a hub. Sounds like the UPS store didn't get the memo.
To save cost go to an online shipping site. I use Pirate Ship. They get you a MUCH better rate than going to UPS (full retail cost). I package and print the label, then drop it at the closest distrubition center. I paid $38 for an Next Day Air Saver just last week (Alabama to Texas) that would have been double if not more than if the UPS center printed the label. Bring along a copy of the FFL while your at it.

As others have said, if you can locate an FFL that will ship a handgun for you via USPS, that'll be a fraction of the cost of other carriers. Mine usually cost about $15 - $20 for the postage and $20 for the FFL.

USPS is also by far the lowest for long guns, and non-FFLs can ship.

I'm surprised that USPS hasn't already stopped shipping guns. Very surprised.
