Shipping AR lower for SBR engraving...

Friend went to UPS store w AR lower all packaged up to send for SBR engraving.

Clerk asked if box contained any "guns" probably bc address was to Orion Arms

Friend response was "no, the box contains machined parts"

Package was sent via UPS ground. But...the friend tells me he received a very suspicous look from clerk...as if she was.flagging the package.

The engraver is licensed FFL that he shipped to and he shipping to have a repair (which is what engraving is considered).

Friend is worried package will be seized, opened, and turned over to ATF investigations...why is he stressing so much and what is worst case scenario here...?

Has any law been broken or has just UPS policy been violated?

UPS rules require overnight shipment by air. At a high price I'll add. They also require it be shipped from a service center, not a UPS store.

That said, I might have done the same thing.

I just went through a similar experience. I had a rifle rebarreled.
The UPS lady made like she had issues with it. I assured her that it was only gun parts. The shooting parts were not in the package. All went well with the delivery... Both ways

Far as I know. AR lowers should be able to ship via ground anyway, I believe the UPS policy is handguns go overnight............no reason to lie about the contents, all your friend accomplished is making himself nervous

had same thing happen when mailing an upper...go to main ups or fedex not ups "store" i was told they can not handle gun parts or guns...as far as gun part not being a gun as said in above post...technically it is considered a firearm which is why it must go through ffl

Just because the lower is the gun part which contains the serial number does not make the gun part a gun.
according to federal law, the serialized receiver IS the firearm. So in fact the lower receiver of an AR15 is a gun all by itself.

I had to send a rifle back to Century Arms for repair a few years back. I just went to my LGS and had them ship it (a bit more expensive but you won't get hassled). Then, Century just sent the rifle UPS back to my house.

Just because the lower is the gun part which contains the serial number does not make the gun part a gun.

Completely factually incorrect. The serial number is key as most FAL S/Ns are on the "upper" as are Ruger Mark series .22 handguns.

Lindy, in the future, only one thread on a subject please.

For the record THR does not condone being less than truthful in any firearm transaction.
