I was talking with a buddy today and as the conversation unfolded he recalled a small shop in town that used to carry reloading components. It's in an out of the way and bad part of town so we never really think of them. He called over there and they said they had a few thousand primers.

We immediately jumped in the truck and went. When we got there my buddy started walking toward the back of the store where they keep the reloading stuff. As we walked deeper into the store a golden light began to glow...closer we got and the golden glow became heavenly beams of sunshine casting down upon the reloading section. Angels floated above us and played harps and horns and tiny guitars (NOT ukeleles...they were GUITARS...just tiny ones) as we gazed upon the inventory.

They had not "a few thousand" primers...they had MANY thousand primers in all flavors. Small and large, rifle and pistol, Winchester, Remington, CCI, Wolf, you name it and it was there.

They had enough gunpowder for a pirate ship. I could...not...believe...my eyes.

They had just about everything. I was shocked.

We bought our supplies and had to resist the urge to take it all. After we calmed down we bought what we thought we needed, made sure we left a lot of primers on the shelf and went to check out. I was about to take a brick of small pistol and I asked the guy next to me if he wanted any...just wanted to make sure I wasn't taking something he needed or wanted...told him I'd be happy to split them with him. He said no and I finished up and went up front.

It was great.

As a funny/strange/sad aside...as I was checking out a dude walked up from way in the back and stared slack-jawed at my box. He was just standing and staring. I told him to spit it out...say it whatever it was that he had on his mind.

He said he needed small pistol primers and he had just called and they said they had some etc. I told him I had left plenty of small pistol primers on the shelf...there were literally thousands of Wolf primes sitting there.

He said he didn't want Wolf primers...he was hoping for something better. I about laughed when he said it...no big deal I told him...I'd sell him some of the ones I just bought...at the same price I just paid...how many do you want?

He got 200 from us and we all talked for a while. I found it funny after the fact that the guy would come up to me asking me for primers I just bought when there were Wolf primers sitting right there on the shelf. People continue to amaze me.

They still have a metric butt ton of primers and powder...don't know how they get their supplies or if those have been sitting there the entire time. Heck they even had bullets and brass...you could have walked into that store today and picked up reloading as a hobby and had everything you needed on hand...THAT is a heckuva thing in this market.

Not a surprise to me, at all. The factories are still making them, and hoarders can only afford to buy so many lifetime supplies before they run out of space and money.

I will not be surprised to see primers selling for $10.00/k in the near future, when no one's buying!

Sorry...I guess I didn't mention price because it was normal...as in the "old normal" rather than the "panic prices" we are seeing online. $3.99 per 100 on primers.

Powder was anywhere from $18.99 to $21 per pound. Nothing elevated at all.

That's what I'm waiting on. In the mean time I have plenty to see me through the price gouging.

I had them before all this panic buying started.

>>>>>$3.99 per 100 on primers. <<<<<

Is not too high given that they are breaking a box for your convenience. I doubt theyre charging the multiple for a full K.

Yea, but if you gotta have them, ya gotta buy them. Better than nothing to buy. Next time even more people will be ready than this time.

My son told me yesterday a friend of his was desperately seeking 9MM ammo. Oh well. I did make sure my son had what he needed. I gave him a .30 cal can of it. What he does with his is his business. I imagine he'll share some.

Sounds a lot like a little place I shop in Memphis. All the big box stores are sold out of everything but this place has an excellent selection of reloading components.

Didn't happen last time, isn't going to happen this time.
As soon as the so-called "hoarders" drop their prices to "market rate", whatever that happens to be, they will sell.

Last time when all the primers disappeared, I saw people (trying to) sell them for $70/1000. Never saw anyone buying, but 12-18 months later, I saw lots of private sellers (or vendors who don't ordinarily sell reloading supplies, in other words, obvious speculators) selling primers in the last year for $35/1000, and they all sold. For a brief time we were seeing them for $32 or so, but that didn't last.

All the "excess" that is being "hoarded" by "speculators" now, will be bought as insurance by all the new reloaders so they don't get caught with their pants down next time.

PS: "Last time" (2008-2010) ARs went from $650 to $1200 (and more) overnight. I kept hearing how "those guys" who were "hoearding" ARs would go broke, starve and have to give those ARS away when they couldn't make a house payment. Never did see any of those $1200 selling later for $6-700, nor did the price of ARs dip back down much below $1000....

40 bucks per 1k is more than a little high.
I buy most of my stuff at Bass Pro and theyve been $3.99 per hundred for the past few years.

Might be high compared to other places but thats been "normal" here since the first time obama got elected

My "secret little store" is asking $34 for Winchesters and has plenty..When, I compare them to the pile of $20 Tulas I have at home, I also consider them high.:D

I agree, don't expect to see a drop in price from what most shops were charging a few months ago. Prices were creeping up a dollar here and there even before November. I bet more people will learn to have a year or two worth of supplies on hand than people who will regret their purchases and flood the market with primers. That goes double for 30rd mags.

Yeah, some things are breaking loose, slowly. Powder can be had, primers too.

Still not a lot going on with bullets, though, .224 in particular. Brass is pretty scarce in .223/5.56 from the retail outlets too.

Those days are never coming back.

My favorite shop received their Hodgdon/IMR shipment today but no Varget or big jugs of H4895.

I bought 1k winchester small primers last week for 32 bucks...and a pound of powder for 23 bucks..they were selling the primers for 3.99 for 100..alot of the powders were sold out. and I picked up a new powder to me, but was on my list of powder to try.. maybe by this summer the shelves will be full again at regular prices..time will tell

Um, AR's with Plum Crazy lowers were selling for under $600.00 aplenty, just a year ago. Less desirable brands with aluminum lowers were selling around $600-700, and were even avail at Walmart.

And CCI SRP were selling for $15/k around the same time, on sale at Cabelas across the country. Russian primers were selling for 15.5/k just a few months ago at Widener's.

$10.00/k primers probably won't happen because of inflation. But prices will likely come back down to normal, adjusted for inflation.

If the "hoarders" are trying to sell off their excess, the prices may remain high, but only if manufacturers decide to close shop. If they increase production, you can get a situation where the manufacturers are pumping out lots of primers. And hoarders/resellers are trying to unload when they realize they have more than they need or can efficiently keep in stock (they need room for stuff that actually sells). And then the market price can crash... to a new historical low (adjusted for inflation.)

You can't sell bubble gum when everyone who chews bubble gum has a lifetime supply. So unless a bunch of manufacturers go out of business or on an extended vacation, prices will come back down. The simple fact is that the shortage is largely because of people stocking up, not because those components are being consumed that much faster. If that were the case, yes, prices would remain high until supply caught up with consumption. But that's not the case. Supply IS plenty for consumption. There's just a temporary spike in demand, as far as I'm concerned.

Since I started reloading again about three years ago I have never seen primers locally for anything but $5 per hundred and $50 per K. That is the reason I buy from PV. If only ordering primers they have been $297 per 10K, delivered. An 8# jug of HP38 ordered with them for $113.50 made the primers even cheaper.
If I wanted to make the 50 mile round trip to Cabelas nothing would be any cheaper and it was always a crapshoot as to what would be in stock. Plus you would have 8.25% sales tax and about $10 worth of gasoline.

I just had the same experience! Walked out with LPP's, win231, h110. No items related to 223 however. It's the local store nobody visits because they charge to much.. But today I was happy to pay $40 for primers and $30 for powder.

now if xtreme bullets starts shipping orders I'll be set!

Before the latest crunch my local dealer had fairly good prices but they never did get down to where they were or where I would like them to be.
Powder was $24.95/lb
Primers were $28.95/k
Those prices were not all that great but better than most I see people talking about on the forums.

I hated when primers were $19.95/k and powder was $14.95/lb just 6 or 7 years ago, now I long for those prices again!!!

I am starting a run of 9mm. Just opened a sleeve of Winchester Small Pistol that I paid $14.95 a thousand for. The eight pound keg of Universal Clays cost me $108 with tax.

I sure miss the good ol' days of seven dollar primer and powder.

If you think prices will be returning to what they were a few months ago then you're not much of a student of history.
