Just want to vent off my frustration, provided you guys don't mind me doing so.

I'm currently using this French stuff for reloading 9 mm (which is all I shoot). It used to be a great powder for this caliber. It comes in short stick, extruded form, and makes for easy and consistent charges with Lee and Dillon powder measures (just to mention two). Usually, 4'7 of it propelled a 124 gr projectile quick enough to make a 125 power factor (approx 1010 ft/sec).

But one day, someone at Vectan decided that they'd change the formulation of their very well sold BA-9, and didn't feel the need to tell their customers. Everyone complained that they needed almost 1 grain more to make factor and that the shot wasn't as comfortable as it used to be. Later on, it was ascertained that there were two different BA-9s, one with a slower burn rate than the other, and that there was no way to tell one from the other except for a slight variation in colour. The slower one is a greenish grey, the other (the good one) is plain grey.

I've been unlucky enough to get the slower one. I've needed 5'5 grains of it to reach 1012 ft/sec out of my STAR 30M. Shots feel snappier than with the Magtech stuff I used to shoot before I started reloading :(.

The only alternative is a locally manufactured powder called Optima A, which is known for being faster, but the downside is that it comes in flakes, powder charges won't be as consistent. No VihtaVuori, and of course, no American powders imported over here. No other alternative.

Competition season over here is gone, so I've already decided I'll spend this pound of BA-9 on training, then get Optima A next time.

I can understand you guys when you complain about shortages, gun control, etc, but... I'm still jealous .

We feel your pain over here. A lot of HS-7 (Now discontinued) fans would agree with your frustration. There are several that have been discontinued leaving their fans hanging.

I'm still jealous

Yea, we still have it pretty danged good. :)

We tend to take for granted what we have living in the land of the free and home of the brave.

For you a powder shortage is when you can only get one of two available powders. OUCH!

Your English is extremely good for a Spaniard, no insult intended. We've felt you pain over here the last 9-10 months. But ai thought Vectan was a German company? I believe it's Vectan SP-2 that I've had recommended to me on several occasions, with the caveat that I'd probably have to travel to a foreign nation to find it. It's supposedly a wonderful powder for high velocity .45acp loads.

Jesse, I understand what you mean. There's no problem with availability, to be honest. At my LGS both BA-9 and Optima A are readily available, but we're limited to these two powders in the whole country. It's just impossible to obtain any other brand :(. Primers and bullets, similar story. I had no problem purchasing them but was limited to choose between two copper plated types and one type of lead bullets. Primers, there was only S&B available. Presses and their accessories... I waited for two months until I got my LCT home. Gun stores were out of stock and had no idea when they would have their orders shipped in. This "shortage" is affecting everyone... everywhere.

KansasSasquatch, Vectan is a French company, that's for sure. In fact, if I'm not mistaken it's owned by the French government (the name of the company is SNPE) and they have some sort of monopoly with powder manufacturing in France. You can find and buy other brands in France (VihtaVuori, for example) but I think Vectan is the only company allowed to manufacture it . SP2 is a slow burning rate powder. It's used over here to make major power factor with 9 mm in Open Division. I've read about charges of 8 grains of this powder, taking the COL to its very limits and using a firm crimp. It's also used for the .38 Super shooters in the same Division. I have no idea on how it would perform on the .45 ACP, but I could ask that for you if you want to. Vectan does not release reliable load data, so it's the reloading community the one who has to do their experiments  and share data.

Thanks for your compliment. No offense taken since I'm aware of how bad we are at languages. English requires a big effort for us, mainly due to the pronunciation. There are sounds in your language that don't have an equivalent in Spanish, so it's hard to find a Spaniard that doesn't speak English with an accent (mine isn't too bad, they say ) and... the other way around, native English speakers who learn Spanish are easily picked up as soon as they speak. You've probably had some experience with my compatriots so as to find out we're bad at languages, haven't you? ;).

As far as load data, if you need help don't be afraid to ask here. Our US books are pretty limited on Vectan data but some does exist.

As far as your English goes, I didn't really mean you know it well for a Spaniard. What I should have said is you know it well for someone who's first language is probably not English. You seem to better at writing in English than half the people born in the US these days :)

Sasquatch, I think Nordeste has a better hand with English than most Americans.

Should we start teaching him Redneck Manglish? :D

Nordeste's command of the language is great. He writes better than many native born Americans here.

Sorry for your troubles over there. That would make me quite upset.

^^ :D:D
I'd try my best :D (with the redneck manglish). Thanks for your compliment, Bullfrog ;), appreciate.
I'll tell you something. I live with a girl who lived a few months in LA and loved California to bits. We'd love to visit the US next year, but she wants to go to NYC. That's gonna be a problem because even though I'm sure I'd have fun in NYC and there are heaps of wonderful things to be seen there, it's just not the part of America I'd love to visit... The good ole South attracts more my attention. Big dilemma. She wants to go shopping, I wanna go shooting and see NASCAR .

BTW, according to the Malfatti manual, looks like you'd need 8'5 grains of SP2 to get 1033 ft per using 230 grain ball FMJ bullets. No data on COL, though. Reports say this load is very pleasant to shoot.

Nordeste, If you make it to Florida - South Florida to be exact, then let me know. I am in the Miami-Hollywood area and there are a couple of decent ranges here.

Asi, que aunque la novia quiere ir de compras, tu puedes ir al campo de tiro, y asi los dos quedan satisfechos.

translation -- -even though the girlfriend wants to go shopping, he can go to the range and that way both are satisfied.

Eddy

Perhaps a place like Atlanta, Georgia might be the city to visit? Charleston, South Carolina maybe?

I'm not up to speed on the cities that offer good shopping trips or NASCAR. Sorry.

Thanks for your suggestions... and offers!. Florida is definitely on my "would like" list (and having range buddies would be great). The current state of negotiations is that she'd like a few days in NYC, but my thought is that you don't pay an expensive plane ticket to stay for a week (which is what travel agencies usually offer over here for NYC holiday trips). I'd like to rent a car, hit the road and travel across the US, but then she says she would probably be uncomfortable traveling by car that much... She's succumbed to the charm of NYC, and I have other likes .

Will try to find a compromise. After all, there's plenty of time ahead 'till then .

Amigo Nordeste,
Tell her -- - Miami Beach, South Beach, Ft. Lauderdale. Orlando - Disney, Universal Studios, etc...
To keep it gun related, pick any Glock model in 9 or 40. You can try out my reloads in 9, 40 or 45. And, suppressors on 22LR, 9, 45, 223.
It would be a long car trip from NYC to Miami, but you get to see a good chunk of the Eastern US that way. Not as breathtaking as the West but nice drive even then.

I'm in California, but I have to agree with the Floridians. Wait until the middle of January, then go to Florida for a couple of weeks. You won't regret it.

Find some matches to shoot online, and then tell the match director that you're coming from overseas, and would kindly like to borrow a pistol to shoot the match. I'm quite sure you'll find more than one shooter would be glad to let you shoot his backup pistol for the match, ammo included!

Miami IS NYC only relocated to South Florida. It has all of the traffic, better shopping, New York drivers (particularly in the winter) haughty NY waiters, expensive restaurants, wild night-clubs, art galleries, homeless people, crime and corruption. It does not have public transportation, a city income tax, or rude taxi drivers. It makes up for this deficiency by having incredible beaches, alligators, and easy access gun ranges. Miami is 10X more tourist friendly, and nearly everyone speaks Spanish (sort of or pretends to)
