Once Upon a Time in Mexico

Anyone seen this movie? How is it? I am not expecting it to be another "Heat" or "Way of the Gun". I am thinking it will be more like Desperado. Decent action with some funny parts and characters.

So how is Once Upon a Time in Mexico?

You pretty much got it right. Ok plot, lots of gunfire, a few comedic moments, and not too many surprises. Oh yeah, it also has Selma Hayak, which in and of itself is a pretty good thing for a movie.

I thought it was a good movie. It was less Arcade Game than Desperado, and through the use of really schlocky title and subtitle fonts and various camera shooting styles, the film feels very 'low budget' and less 'perfectly polished' than a lot of these mass-produced garbage action films. And, very much like Desperado, the movie never quite takes itself too seriously.

I REALLY want rocket-propelled shotgun shells with no recoil and sparklers.

Also, for you Johnny Depp haters, you should go see the movie just to see him get his eyeballs drilled out. Yes, he gets his eyeballs drilled out.

Um...I went to sleep. Really.

This is an asian action-fantasy style movie, with lots of people flying through the air when hit.

I enjoyed Desperado quite a bit more.

There was a conspicuous lack of paired Rugers used in Desperado, but plenty of other goodies, including but not limited to:

sawed-off double barrelled shotgun
Silenced Beretta 92
red-dot/scoped 1911
silenced revolver

Also thought the people rising up to resist the military coup was a perfect example of the need for the 2nd Amendment. Loved the vendor's stand with a 30-cal machine gun mount!

Summary: If you're looking for anything approaching realistic gunplay, this is not your movie. If you want fun and 'splosions, this is probably a good bet.

For what it is worth, I read recently that Depp claims that the aforementioned quote was taken out of context and what he did say was (IIRC) that America is like a puppy due to our youth compared to Europe and that he prefers Europe for its cultural histories. He seemed quite upset about the misquote.

I still admire his acting abilities.

I don't know how misqouted that could be, seems more like he saw his career going down the crapper and decided to waffle. This is what he said to explain;

"What I was saying was that, compared to Europe, America is a very young country and we are still growing as a nation. My deepest apologies to those who were offended, affected, or hurt by this insanely twisted deformation of my words and intent."

Once upon a time in Mexico is part of a trilogy, the same director made El Mariachi and Desperado. Once is suppose to be part 4, part 3 was never made but in Once they make reference to it with flashbacks.

Just for fun, I have to chime in about Johnny Depp. The girl I dated (and almost married) in the late '80s had a roommate who decorated her side of the dorm room with, I counted, 38 pictures of Johnny Depp, from the 21 Jump Street days. I just thought that was hilarious.
