Stopped by a local shop this evening to pick up a pistol I bought and had this shop do the transfer for me. I had spoken to an employee about it and he thought that transfers were $25. Not bad. I went ahead and got his FFL sent it in w/ my payment and waited. got the call at work that it arrived and asked about the fee...$50! :what: I've known the owner for years and my brother used to work for him so I figured I would likely get the $25 rate when he realized who it was. Nope! The owner was there but suppoedly it was him that made out the reciept with the transfer cost. I told the clerk (who was very friendly about it all) that that was double evryone else and 'wicked" high. I also told him they should change the listing on Guns America showing the rate as $25. The clerk seemed genuinely apologetic so I figured it was only an extra $25 at stake so just to eat it. I decided before even getting my son in his car seat that none of my money would ever cross that counter again. More than likely I'll not return to even browse.
What irks me most is that had I had the patience, I could've waited another week or so and done the transfer through my brother who has his FFL and paid practically nothing :banghead- ok, ok it wouldv'e cost me a six-pack. ;) Just couldn't wait. I will next time!:

I suggest you write a letter to the owner with a copy of the $25 advertisement and your reciept and ask for a reimbursement.

If you get it then you can keep doing business with the shop.

it seems to me that many gunshop owners aren't very business savvy, they seem to be focused on making every last dollar they can on every transaction. I sell musical instruments and have been known to give sizable discounts on student model instruments, chances are if I sell someone a student flute at near cost they'll most likely come back in a couple years to buy one of the professional model ones with a lot higher profit margin.

times change

i am seeing it more and more the so called friendly little shops are pushing to put themselves out of business...i dont know what they are thinking...they know they have to compete with the big boys as far as price so you would think they would be a little bit relaxed on some things...but most are not..most shops in my area charge 25-50 for a transfer with non shops as low as 10.00....as for me i dont get any feelings of being special when i walk into a shop anymore..they are out to make as much money as fast as they can...so i go to the big boys "bass pro etc" for normal stuff or i win an auction on gunbroker or i buy it from my ffl local who only charges 10 percent over cost...it is a shame..i used to enjoy going to the shops and chatting and seeing the inventory...but times change

There is a shop ten minutes from my house - they charge $50 for tranfers.

There is another shop thirty minutes from my house - they charge $20.

$50 bucks is simply ridiculous.

The choice is simple.... and since I'm on the other side of town anyway...I always spend an additional $20 on ammo, range time, etc. at store #2 ..and I still come out $10 ahead.

I've spent a few hundred bucks at store number two this year, and maybe $50 at store one.

Never did understand how business owners are willing to lose loyal customers for such small amounts of money  That shop would have made that money from you over time (prolly from next purchase!) but instead chose to lose you as a customer...

Not even gonn abother with the letter. I did consider it though. I will - in my own subtle way - let it known to certain people exactly what my feelings are towards this whle thing. These particular peole will more than lkely mention it all to the owner. I will have my cake and eat it too!:neener:

Alot of the shops around here charge $50.00, and it is totally ridiculous. I found one small shop with a very savvy young man running the place, he charges $20.00, he told me "it brings in customers, after they pick up their gun they look around and almost always come back to spend some money". Get a clue you shop owners out there!!!!! .......tom

Tomkatz,

You need to come up to Edmonds/Lynnwood.
I have 4 dealers within 3 miles of me that have good transfer prices
$25 for anything
$25, but will only accect a gun shipped from another FFL
$25 for anything they don't stock
$35 for anything

$50 is robbery!!!
