My son and I went to the public outdoor range today since I had cattle on our land where my range is and we were set up at the 50yd and my son was shooting his 22 and I was sighting in my SKS and we were spotting each others shots through the spotting scope. The guy next to us was shooting a Rock Island 1911 and it was jamming about ever other shot. So I started talking to him about it. Turns out he's had it two weeks and this is the second time shooting it.
I let him know I'm very familiar with the 1911 being I've owned one have torn it down plenty.
I asked him if he wanted me to look at it for him and he said "sure".
He was looking over me like it was the first time it's ever been apart. I found the recoil spring was put on backwards and there was no lube at all on the gun.
He said he had his friend clean it the first time because he didn't know how to take it apart or anything (I could tell someone not real familiar with 1911'a had because the take down pin had scratched the frame)
I pulled out my lube and lubed it for him showing him where all to lube and showed him how it disassembled and reassembled.
First shots out jamb. He was limp wristing it and had a horrible grip period.
I gave him some pointers on how to hold it I shot a full mag not a jamb. He used my advise on grip and it only jammed once.

This guy was so happy now he knew how to care for the gun and that it would shoot without jamming he was all smiles.

Btw I was stacking shots on the SKS iron sighted at 50yds too

Very nice. I've met a lot of very helpful and knowledgeable people at the range.

I've been on the receiving end of a willing fellow shooter several times. That's why ,if I'm having a bit of trouble, I don't turn down help. Some of those guys have pulled me out of some bad habits.

I have only been able to give help a few times. Pay it forward.

Always good to help a fellow shooter, especially if they're new to it and are receptive to being helped.

I had the opportunity to adjust the front sight post of a shooter 's SKS . Also he let me shoot several rounds. It was a win win situation with a new friendship struck at best.

As enthusiasts of the shooting sports, we should be stewards of the sport. Projecting a friendly positive image goes a long way towards that. Kudos to you.

And of course it helps that the other shooter was willing to accept help and not go all macho about it. Smart guy, and good on you for offering to help.

In addition to the well-deserved kudos to you for your helping a fellow shooter, you also had a wonderful opportunity for your son to learn the value of that aforementioned stewardship. Nice job.

After I thought about it for a while, I thought how easily, with a different author, with a different mindset, this could have started out as a "Dumb guy at the range with a cheap P.O.S. 1911" thread.

Kinda refreshing.

Very nice of you to do and hopefully he'll walk away from it recognizing the value of your assistance. I'd like to think i'd do the same, but I'm sure I've turned my shoulder at an opportunity like this in the past.

"I pulled out my lube and lubed it for him showing him where all to lube"

I'm a grown man, but I still can't help but giggle like a middle schooler sometimes....
