One powder for rifle and pistol

Purely hypothetical, if you were limited to one powder for rifle and one powder for pistol, what would it be? For me, I load 38/357 and 40 S&W in handguns, so I would go with Unique. For rifle's, I load .223 and .308, H-4895 for me.

Some rifle cases can be loaded with Unique, like 45-70, I have seen that data. I like W231 for pistol and H4895 or H335 for rifle.

I load 38, 357, 9mm, & 45 with Bullseye and 223 & 308 with Varget. If you wanted one powder for all it would depend greatly on which calibers you load and what your expectations of them were.

One powder for handgun.
One powder for rifle.
One powder for shotgun.


I would pick W231 for handgun.
I would pick IMR 4895 for rifle.
I would pick Red Dot for shotgun.

The concept is, if my actions are not effecting you it warrants no action by you. Kind of like people wanting to remove your 2nd amendment right (or any other for that matter) even though you have never done any harm while having it. I think it actually came from a supreme court justice. It's viewed as a libertarian concept these days.

To stay on topic, 231 and 748 are fairly versatile.

If the balloon were to go up and I grabbed one rifle and one pistol, it would be my S&W M21 and Marlin or Winchester 44 mag rifle.

Having said that, I would be content and well armed if all I had was Winchester 231.

Both the rifle and the pistol use 44 special ammo and W231 is great in that round.

Like LGBloader, I'm using Varget and Unique for my loads.

I played with Clays for my pistol loads for a little, but it was too fast a powder for my tastes and ended up traded for more Varget.

More interesting is one powder for *both*. (Red Dot or Unique can do it)

Pistol: Universal or No.5


If I could add one more it would be 2400 or No.9 for magnum pistol.

If I could add one more it would be No.2 or Bullseye for target .38 loads.
