I took my 16 year old daughter to the range for the first time today.

Her Mother died of Breast Cancer about 5 years ago and I did not have a chance to teach her to shoot, when she was a little girl.. She has three older brothers I taught when they were young and I was feeling guilty about not teaching her, as she was scared of guns.

Anyway, went to the range and rented a Ruger .22. Went through all the basics. Safety, where to always point the gun, keep finger off trigger, how to load a mag., rack the slide, etc.

First shot was dead in the middle of the "X". Thought - How lucky can you get? She proceeded to shot 99 more rounds in the black.

Next - brought out the Kahr PM9. She shot all 20 rounds I gave her on the paper. Probably a 12" group. She didn't like the recoil - said it hurt her hand.

Next - broke out the Glock G-30, .45 cal. Thinking "I hope this doesn't turn her off to guns". She sighted in and pulled the trigger. Out of her mouth came "SWEEEET" In the bullseye. She turned to me and said. "I really like this gun, Dad". Proceeded to put 20 rounds in a 8" group at 21 feet.

My chest is so big I couldn't hardly get out the door when it came time to leave.

Came home and called her oldest brother and said, "I want to go shoot the big one again".

By the way the range master complimented me on her gun safety and knowledge as we were leaving.

Now if I can just get my new wife to the range.

sensei (one proud daddy)

Congratulations! As a dad I know that feeling of busting with pride. As Preacherman said, you 'll be needing another Glock pretty soon!:D

OK. Don't put it off, don't try to talk yourself or anyone else out of it.

Do the right thing.

Go buy that young lady a Glock, will ya? And no talking back! :)

Seriously, congratulations!

sensei - PROUD???? I should say ... how about the Peacock eh ... struttin his feathers??!:p

Every time I read these delightful experiences it just brings back all over, what went down with my own kids .... oh so long ago. Many here have endured my own reckless proclaiming of my own pride in them ... started quite young ... and now both married etc.

I'm really not sure what it is quite but ... there is something unique about parent/child, and relationships when it comes to range time together .. and particularly the early days.

I tirelessly post this pic (sorry!!) .. my daughter last year .. after having not even had a chance to shoot for a year .. it all comes back to her and she is good .... here with my P97. Could easily be your daughter in 13 years time.

And just for balance! .. last time my son came over .. he rather enjoys the 44 mag!!

I didn't know that you were allowed to live in TX without owning a .22

:D

As other's have said, you had better get out & start looking for another Glock for yourself. Around here it is amazing how many of the pistols that I had bought for myself that once their shot by my better half become "mine" & I have to go shopping again :D .

KICK Butt Job sensei

Good for you and her. I think the the slower push of the .45 recoil seems to agree with new shooters better than the sharper 9mm recoil. Like p95, I can't resist posting opne of mine also :)

So, sensei, when young gentlemen come to call on a Saturday night, will you work in this fact? Maybe be cleaning the guns in your gi when the boys come over?:D

"Be home at 10:30, dear. We have to get to the range early tomorrow."

I would think that would help ensure compliance with Dad's orders from her and him.:D

What an awesome coincidence, I took my 13 yr old daughter to the range today, too. I had my Ruger MkII and a CZ50, the last time we went, I took my Kimber .45 with the Ruger and it kinda scared her the first time I fired it ( actually, she about jumped outa her skin :D ). She really likes the Ruger and she handled the CZ pretty well, it jammed from her limp wristing once in a while. I hope to work her up to her mother's .38 at least. A great day at the range, no doubt!

When did you guys start taking them shooting???
Litman .. if that question is general ... then I can say that my two were started off around,....... lemme see ....... hmmm .... daughter about 9 and son 7. The very first range sessions were mostly ''watch and learn'' .... it helped get them used to noise, and just observe discipline etc.

Wasn't too long tho before they started with .22's ... just rifle ... and probably by the time they were 10 and 8 they were progressing into .22 handgun shooting. Next up was .38 revo ... and so it went on ... their range visits were not over frequent but ... they learned fast .. and as I have mentioned .... it has stood them in good stead to this day.

My daughter regrets being unable to shoot, in UK ..... my son has way too little time but shoots his 7mm and GP-100 when he can. However . best thing is when he gets over .. he doesn't need to bring anything ... he can pick what to shoot of mine! Just want to get him to get a CCW soon and a suitable carry piece.

I fully plan on cleaning my guns whenever my little princess brings someone over. Sensei, I hope mine takes to shooting as well as yours.

My wife is pregnant with the second one...

I wish we had a ''kids pics corner'' . and wish too I had taken pics of mine when young and shooting ... typical!! Never gave it a thought at the time.

Just to indulge myself (I know .. not very gun related, except thru genes!!) ..... my daughter age 18 months (C 1976) ... watching a plane fly over! I used almost all B/W those days ... and the scans don't do em justice.

TechBrute,
My wife and I just love that photo you posted.
Postcard beautiful child among postcard beautiful flowers.

Hi, Chris! :)
I especially love that B/W piccy.

techmike,
Your lovely little ladies can shoot :)
Makes my wife a little insecure about her own shooting though, hehe...

(Oh, and congratulations to sensei and his daughter!!!)

Thanks, Horge! I think everyone in Texas with kids has taken Bluebonnet pictures at one time or another. :D

Man, you guys rock. I hope I can be as good a daddy as y'all are. :) It seems like it would be extremely tough to be the father of a girl with the way things are today. I don't think there are enough guys out there that respect women the way they should. Glad I'm having a boy, a boy that WILL grow up to respect women.

Boys will respect my little girl if I have anything to say about it...

I'm hoping this one's a boy, we'll find out at the end of the month. Another girl and I'll have an all girl shooting team. :D We're hoping for 3, and if this one's a boy I won't sweat the third one. If this one's a girl, I'll be a wreck about the third one.

OK, since we're braggin' on our girls, attached is my oldest (haven't mastered the picture posting thingi yet)....

Straight A student with a full ride to ASU next year. Sits #20 out of her class of nearly 900 kids. Varsity Tennis. Accepted to both USC and NYU. Will major in Studio Art, and just this morning we learned that our Congressman selected a piece of her art to hang in the corridor connecting the Cannon House Office Building and the Congress (plus a $12000 scholarship to Savannah College of Art and Design--if she can coordinate it with her ASU scholarship).

Her boyfriend is equally accomplished. He got appointments to all three service academies, and will go into the Air Force in the hopes of flying fighters. Varsity football, wrestling, and track. Aced the math part of the SATs. And most importantly to me, he is treating my daughter with all the respect that I and her mother expect. He is a fine young man.

Yep. I am one proud pop. In fairness, we also have a fine son and another daughter who are making us proud too.

And, as you can see, she's a shooter too. She's shooting Mrs. AZLib's Walther PPK in the photo, but she really likes my Browning Hi-Power seen on the shooting bench. Although its been years since she's done any of it, to keep her boyfriend (and everyone else) honest, she's a blackbelt in TaeKwonDo.
