If money is no object then that would greatly influence my decision. I'd take a brand new 870 Police with wood furniture and rifle sights on an 18.5 inch barrel. I'd put a sling on it and an ammo carrier on the butt. No lights, no lasers, no side saddles, no pistol grips.
Truthfully, I'd be happy with 870 police, 870 wingmaster, benelli nova or supernova, or mossberg 590 or 590A1.
Right now, I keep a bone stock maverick 88 with 18.5 inch barrel and a bead for HD. And I'm not running out and buying a new shotgun.
 
I have less felt recoil with my Benelli SuperNova than any other shotgun I’ve ever shot. SD loads can kick some so mitigating that is important to me. This is certainly related to its weight of 8lbs and the way it fits me, but also possibly the Comfortech stock.

I like the various controls on the gun and the extra long forearm. I always felt like the 870’s forearm were too short and my hand was too far forward.

I’ve also shot it a lot and shoot it well. So for me, I’d go with a SuperNova tactical with the Comfortech stock, not the pistol grip version.

I do wish accessories like extra barrels weren’t so ridiculously overpriced. I’ve never looked but I’m sure somebody makes light mounts and other add-ons for them.

If I wanted a semi I might look at the M2 Tactical since it would likely have a very similar fit.

Seriously though I'm really happy with my Remington 11-87 Police.
 
My 20 ga coach gun

Why? It is more compact and lighter in weight than my Remington 870 hence easier to handle in small spaces within the home. Has adequate power to do the job. I can use it for quail hunting around my farm and when riding my mule it comes out faster from the scabbard when needed since it is 5 inches shorter than my 870. I can stand with it by my side holding it with it not touching the floor and swing it quickly into action. The only negative thing it has 2 quick shots and then it must be reloaded, but I an do it very quickly, since I practice with it often. My 870 stays in the barn tack room, where it belongs. Snoop
 
My 20 gauge Spartan coach gun. It's short and handy even with a usable stock on it, intimidating, light and quick on target, and I know it well from wing shooting with it. The fact that it's a great bird gun doesn't deter from its bedroom standby duties, but on the contrary gives me plenty of practice and familiarity with it. It's for that reason I believe a home defense gun SHOULD be one I hunt with. YMMV But, better to KNOW a gun and be well practiced than to leave it loaded in a corner for years on end, maybe put a few rounds through it couple times a year. JMHO.

BTW, it was a really good season for doves this year. I gave that thing a workout. :D
 
I have a supernova tactical as well with ghost ring sights but chose the pistol grip model
They are kinnA funky looking but great on features. My deciding factor was that it could take 3.5 inch shells. Just for fun
I'll add I really like the short keltec if it turns out to be functional and durable I want one
 
While I am glad I don't have to make a choice if I had to it would be one of my Remington 870 Wingmasters. Both have 20" smooth bore barrels with rifle sights (some call them slug barrels). I got them used and these were the barrels that came on them. They seem to be the perfect length for me without being too cumbersome.
 
I like my 870 Police. I LOVE my old Ithaca 37. It wins on balance, capacity, and is old enough I can slam fire it to create a ridiculous wall of lead;)
 
870, BUT.....

There's a lot of good choices out there. Any reliable repeater YOU can operate effectively and in comfort qualifies...
 
An American made 20 gauge semi-auto with a short barrel. Seems the market place and manufactures don`t agree with me, so I might have to go 12 gauge or foreign.

Model should have been around for several years to have a track record. If they have made and sold at least 1 million guns it would be a plus because I am not fond of Rambo-Deluxe flavor of the month guns.

Right now, I have an 11-87 20 ga. but I don`t like the rifle barrel for HD and I haven`t yet psyched myself up to whack the vent rib barrell . Once I whack the barrel I need a lot more practice with it and if it works out I would buy a second one as backup.

If I felt like spending money, I would get a Mossberg semi in 12 guage/ 18 inch with LE ammo. Actually, if it worked to my satisfaction I would buy 2 identical to have a backup.

Meanwhile I`m happy with my 20 gauge Maverick
 
I tend to vote my bedside gun, Remington 870 Wingmaster 20GA, 20 inch barrel, extended magazine and SureFire 618 fore stock light, etc. Although if money were really no object it would probably be a 20GA Winchester Model 12
 
870 by a long shot. Because I've always had one and I'm use to the controls being where they are. So far one has been with me on all of my Illinois deer seasons, so I use it alot. Also the fact that parts would be easy to find if something broke.
