End of the work day and I walked out to my motorcycle parked on the edge of the parking lot at work. As I was preparing to get on it a guy about 35 or 40 happened by. He was walking down the street, carrying a walking stick. He was wearing what I'd describe as a plantation hat, a very expensive white polo shirt and white shorts. This guy wasn't a bum - looked to me more like he belonged at a California Yacht Club than walking down an Oklahoma City street.

Anyway this guy takes a look, instantly recognizes my Honda Shadow Aero and we're off to the races discussing MC's. After about 5 minutes or so later he noticed a sticker on the lower right of my bike's windscreen and walks over to take a look - and THAT, as they say, was THAT.

These are the exact words that next left his mouth: "The National Rifle Association - well that'll do it...". He got a worried look on his face and without another sound turned and walked away.

What the heck is up with that?

We'd been getting along fine, talking motorcycles and then he just walks off. I know the NRA isn't all that well loved by most folk in the USA but that just floored me.

It's entirely possible that fella is a shooter who feels "sold-out" by the NRA...

Why do you say that?

C'mon. Really. Possible, but a remote possibility. Sure, a lot of gun-nuts feel the NRA is too moderate, but an NRA sticker means the new friend you just made is a fellow shooter, which would only enhance the new relationship.

Oh, I'm sorry, I forgot that any mention of the NRA is just an opportunity for some people to be more-radical-than-thou.

I am pro guns and have plenty of firearms but still get annoyed at the NRA. They are like the peta of the firearms world.

Maybe he was some sort of conman who was sizing you up for a sting and when he saw that you were probably armed he just gave up.

Peta of the firearms world? That is quite possibly the silliest thing I've read in these forums in a month

Most likely the guy was an anti and likely a liberal ... and oddly enough liberals tend to be less tolerant of the views of others than even the most staunch of conservatives.

Werewolf is more polite than I ... had I been in that position I'd have stopped the guy and said "What? You won't talk to someone with an NRA sticker on their bike? What are you, some kind of bigot? I feel sorry for people like you who are so close minded that you can't even talk to someone with different views than yourself."

11-M,
I did not post to become adversarial with you, merely to offer an other POV.

NRA has been around longer than any of us and spent the majority of their time training - marksmanship and safety.

That training included all forms of civilian marksmanship and for most of its existance the NRA received government cooperation and special deals on surplus firearms to promote their agenda.

In the last few decades a big part of its mission has had to change to an advocate for 2nd amendment rights. That wasn't the original purpose nor desire of the organization. But they took it on and frankly if they had not your guns might have already hit the melting furnace by now.

They may not do everything the way you would, but for those that run it down as an organization you are not giving them the credit they do deserve for their efforts.

Give them $35 a year and it will help keep your 2nd amendment rights safe - they can't do it all , but look at the money you give the government and what are they doing to protect your constitutional rights ??

You may not get all your nurishment on RTKBA via the NRA, but I see no reason to bite the hand that helps feed you. :scrutiny:

The "oh, I'm sorry" part seemed a bit peckish. At any rate, I am not feeling adverse and, as we all know, a typed conversation loses in translation for lack of inflection.

I had a similar thing happen up in Aspen the other day. A contractor that was working at the same job site as me noticed the NRA sticker on the back of my car. He says "So, you're an NRA member, Huh? This was Aspen, but I fearlessly replied "I certainly am, a Life Member." And then it was on. We talked about his guns and my guns and what guns were next on the list.

I wouldn't worry about it much, the next time someone sees your sticker, it'll probably go better.

We have similar things happen when we're at IT conferences. People will ask about our software (used for suspense tracking) and become interested. They ask what company we work for and as soon as we say "Lockheed Martin," they turn up their noses at us. Obviously the only thing we do is build missles and jets, right? :scrutiny:

Dorks.

If he was so rude to just walk away like that without so much as a by your leave, it's probably no loss.

That is odd.

I have a "I love my AK-47", CETMErifles.com, and soon to be NRA sticker on my truck.

I'm a commie hater, and proud.:D

Reminds me of the movie, A Knights Tale... You have been weighed, measured, and found wanting." Guess he didn't like the NRA.:)

What, ya never met a liberal before?

There really arent that many of them who are into cruiser-oriented motorcycles, or really bikes of any kind except scooters. I suspect that he is *into* bikes but doesnt ride, as being both a rider and an anti is pretty counter-intuitive to my mind. There is no way that he was a disgruntled NRA member, because even if he hated the NRA he would have recognized werewolf as a fellow shooter and would have either started talking guns or explaining why he hates the NRA. The guy is obviously an ANTI.

+1. I was at a bar one night where I met an attractive lady that was so interested in me that she called in sick to work to continue to hang out and get to know me. We were getting along great and then she asked me what I was doing at college. When I replied law school to persue corporate or business law she asked me if I was a conservative or liberal. With hesitation I said conservative and tried to steer the conversation back away from politics but she decided to probe my beliefs to see how I could be so wrong (in her eyes). In spite of best efforts to avoid a political discussion she continued to try to convince me why my beliefs were wrong. This ended with her ubruptly getting up and leaving the bar when I wouldn't admit that liberalism was the only way to go.

And they're all homosexual communists as well.

But seriously, this just reinforces my opinion that grown men should not wear shorts. :neener:

Hey wait a minute. I ride a scooter, and I'm no liberal. :neener:

Look at it this way. If he got that ticked off at your NRA sticker, did you really want to talk to him?

Nice Eleven-Mike! Im very familiar with OK and OKC. We have a branch of our family buisness in OKC and salesmen all over the state and I can tell you that guy was a corn in a manuer pile(needle in the haystack for some!) if he was anti. Although I doubt this is really gonna get to you but if it does we know who is better!

I don't think so.

PETA screams at little kids lined up to sing the Oscar Mayer song for a commercial.

PETA equates Jews and frying chickens.

PETA thinks that it's better for people to die of AIDS than to test drugs on animals.

The NRA fights for the rights of gunowners. With a screen name like "LimeyFellow", you ought to know what happened to the Brits, who DON'T have a serious organization fighting for the rights of gunowners.

Do you think that people in the US have too MANY rights?

LOL, just try saying something pro-immigration on a gun board and watch the spittle hit the monitors ...

No one group has a corner on the knee-jerk intolerance market.
