Sometimes the most dangerous assailant you will encounter will be yourself.

Be careful out there.

Glendale man accidentally shoots himself while driving

A motorist was discovered Thursday with a gunshot wound to the leg, an injury that Glendale police later determined to be self-inflicted and unintentional, officials said.

The victim, Joseph Michael Rivera, 23, of Phoenix, told police that a handgun in his pickup truck accidentally discharged, said Sgt. Jim Toomey, a Glendale police spokesman.

Rivera was transported to a Valley hospital for treatment of the wound, Toomey said.

Rivera was discovered about 5 a.m. after people phoned police to report traffic problems at the north end of the 51st Avenue bridge over Grand Avenue.

When officers arrived, they found Rivera slumped over the steering wheel and a gun in the cab of the truck, Toomey said.

Rivera later told investigators that he was carrying the gun for his protection.

Well, if I lived in Glendale I might consider shooting myself as well, in hopes that the ambulance would take me to the East Valley! :neener:

wait.... He just stopped?
I have an emergency first aid kit, I woulda treated myself and tried to drive home or work or wherever, definately woulda taken some asperin though. Glendale ain't that bad, now Hawaiian Gardens. It should be a crime to not CC there.

Feud, Smile when you say that! ;) I know my profile says Phoenix, but Glendale is only 50 feet thataway.

Snottsdale, sheesh :neener:

I guess he forgot to tell the cops that when it "accidentally discharged," it was in his HAND. :( The news article gives more creedence to the notion that guns just can't help themselves, they have these nasty bullets in them, and sometimes they just.......BLAM! "Oh, I'm so sorry, I didn't mean to, I couldn't help it, after all, I'm a GUN!"

Is it a crime to shoot yourself if you didn't MEAN to? I mean, suicide is illegal, so is assault, this is why my fellow cops and I kept trying to get our legislators to pass a "Felony Stupid" law. A lot of these folks wind up removing themselves from the Gene Pool, but others manage to take others with them, and THAT'S where I have a problem. :scrutiny:

Oh, don't get me started on Snottsdale! I'm from Mesa myself, be back there in two more weeks, just have to finish the semester.

The article wasn't very descriptive. I don't know the area, but is it possible the guy hit a nasty pothole or something and the gun actually DID accidentally discharge? I know its unlikely, but as rare as they are, AD's do happen. Faulty guns, types that aren't drop tested, etc. I'm not saying it was, or wasn't an AD. I'm just playin devils advocate while everyone jumps all over the guy.

Colin, I guess anything is theoretically possible, but consider this..............the S & W Model 10 was designed in the late 1890's, and has THREE safety mechanisms that preclude the weapon from firing unless the trigger is pulled. Most auto pistol designs are quite a bit more modern, and have even better safety features. The odds of "I hit a pothole and it just went off!" are pretty durn slim, Slim! :p

Plus, Arizona's roads can be bumpy, but we rarely have significant potholes. The lack of rain, snow, ice, and all that wintry goodness results in roads getting cracked and such, but pot holes aren't normally a problem.

Like I said, I'm just throwin it out there. We (I am guilty too) are pretty quick to jump to conclusions around here, especially when it comes to having all the information. That article didn't tell me much, so I didn't think I could form an educated opinion about it. But you do have an excellent point about the safety features built into guns.

Asprin & GSWs

QUOTE: " Definately woulda taken some asperin though."

FYI asprin is a blood THINNER & as such would be a BAAAAAAAAD thing to take when one is suffering from a GSW

bingo treo, asprin is a no no with a puncture wound.

but this does sound a little fishy to me, I du nno, I wasn't there, maybe he got scared and was getting it in a better position if he needed it maybe?
