Man arrested in shooting of tow truck driver

Sept. 22, 2008 09:22 AM
Associated Press

A disgruntled Phoenix man allegedly opened fire on a tow truck driver with a rifle, wounding the man several times in the legs before barricading himself inside his home.

Sgt. Tommy Thompson said in a statement that police don't believe the wounds suffered by the 40-year-old victim, whose name wasn't immediately available, are life-threatening.

Twenty-six-year-old Jesse Corman surrendered to police about four hours after the 7:30 p.m. shooting Sunday, and was booked for investigation of attempted second-degree murder, endangerment and unlawful discharge of a weapon.

Corman allegedly told police that he felt that the suspect was taking too long unloading his disabled car, and also believed the man had stolen his car keys.

Kudos (in this instance) to AP for not using the term "assault rifle". The reporter on the news last night did.

What type of rifle was it? If it was a .22 bolt action, I doubt they would have called it an assault rifle. If it was an AK, I bet they would have incorrectly called it an "assault rifle".

The reporter may have done well on the "rifle" bit, but notice that in the last paragraph he apparently has the suspect shooting himself.

They definitely do not teach "journalists" how to write any more.

I'm not sure. I heard it on the news last night in the background while I was doing something else. It caught my ear because I heard "assault rifle" a couple times from the reporter.

And a correction... the story is from AP, reprinted by the Arizona Republic/AZCentral.com. So... kudos to AP rather than AZRep. My mistake.

Heh. Didn't notice that. I had to read it a couple times to see it. Funny.

My friends were on that scene last night, of course Im stuck on a horrible detail at the jail for two more weeks. The guy is definitely a nutjob. You would be surprised at the knowledge some of our officers have. All the sergeants I know that work that area are pretty gun savy and a few have collections that would make most here salivate.

Was that near 35th Ave and Thunderbird? One of the guys i work with lives in that neighborhood, he said the Police helicopter was there for quite a while. He didn't know what was going on until this morning when heard it on the news.I'm surprised the local talking heads didn't call it an "automatic assault rifle". We don't often get the most accurate reporting on these type of incidents in Phoenix
