Oakland Police Department Issues Emergency Recall of Gen 4 Glock Duty Handguns

The article claims the pistols are 9mm, but they are .40 S&W Glock 22s and/or 23s.

From the article,

"During training and some parts of yesterday, we found that the guns were malfunctioning," Jordan said. “We made a decision to recall the new guns so they don’t malfunction while an officer is on duty.”

Police said the guns only malfunctioned during training and not in any emergency situations.

The OPD have been in need of new guns for some time. For now, while the recalled guns get repaired or replaced, officers will go back to using the old sidearms."

It will be interesting to see what Glock has to say about this. The officers are being reissued their old Gen 3 Glocks, and in my opinion, Glock should have never attempted to change the already well proven design of the Gen 3, as it was already a superb firearm.

Interesting article,

I know little about the Gen 4's other than they changed the recoil spring and introduced changeable backstraps. I'm sure others that know more about Gen. 4 Glocks will chime in quickly. The article said that they were 9mm, are you certain they were .40's? Just curious.

Multiple sources claim .40 S&W. This is the only one I've seen which claims 9mm. I can't say yes with 100% certainty, however.

Have to agree with this. Changing to interchangable backstraps would have been fine, but Glock tried to fix a known issue where .40S&W guns malf with a tac light as well. Most of the reports of problems with Gen4 Glocks have been with 9mm guns; this is the first I've heard of problems with .40's.

The GEN4 alterations have nothing to do with the light issue. The GEN4 .40 models are having the same problems as the 9mm's.

A few years ago the Indiana State Police had a similar problem with their newly issued Glock 22s. If I remember correctly, they had problems with ejection of the spent casing. They went to Glcok 17s.

I had not heard about this issue until I took the GAC Last week. They claim the problem with the OPD was prototype recoil springs springs that were out of spec ( Not made by glock ) that should have never left the factory. The front diameter of the spring was slightly to small for the barrel opening in the slide, and the recoil spring spring could pop out the front. Glock test fired 5 rounds from every mag for every pistol and this only showed up in a few guns but as soon as the problem was identified it was quickly corrected. ( New correct spec springs for all guns ). Clearly media accuracy is an oxymoron!

i haven't heard of any tac lights causing jamming on gen4 40cals, just one thread where it caused jamming on a gen4 9mm (oddly enough), but that could be any number of reasons.

i think glock did engineering the frame to solve tac light issues on the gen4's. many local cops i've talked to reported issues with the gen3 40cals with tac lights attached. isn't the locking block and the frame insert between the rails beefier on the gen4's, reaper? thought i saw a pic showing that somewhere

i've fired 150 rounds through my gen4 g23 with my trl-1 attached, and no probs at all :) (only prob i had was an out spec extractor, but my gen3 g19 had the same thing lol).

glock hasn't been the same since gaston retired, and his imbecilic kids are running the company.
