I prefer the 5 1/2 inch revolver in a cross draw holster. It's a tad long when sitting down if it's carried strongside, but cross draw it is fine. Mine does not interfere w/ seat belts and can be reached from inside the vehicle, whereas strong side makes it impossible to buckle the seat belt and then impossible to get at the gun once you've buckled the (impossible to buckle) seatbelt.

I've never worried about it, but I would think that retention would be better w/ the crossdraw. I can see the gun, and reach it with either hand. It needs to be pulled across my body to get it out of the holster, so somebody grabbing it would have to move closer to me as they draw the gun, but I suspect I would notice by then.
