Hi, I'm thinking of getting a cz (model #)Full Stock in 30-06. It has iron sights and I was wondering if it is possible to mount a scope in this and still be able to use the open sights. I want this for hunting elk in heavy timber but there is always the possibility of a 200-300 yard shot presenting itself. Thanks, Jeff

One word. Don't!

Side or high mounting a scope so you can also use irons is bad news.
Because there is no way to get a proper stock cheek weld necessary for accuracy.

Just get a good quality 2-7 variable scope and mount it as low as possible.

At 2x low power you will be able to see further & better into the deep dark woods then with iron sights.

At 7x high power, you can hit'em at long range.

Todays scopes are very very reliable.
But if the scope does go south because a horse stomped on it or something, you can loosen two screws with a coin and take the broken scope off in 15 seconds, and then use the back-up iron sights.

I have done it on my 6mm Remington.

I have scope rings that are a bit high, just a bit. They are shaped so I can see through them to the iron sights.

Seeing through the 3-9 scope is no problem.

I don't know if my cheek weld is proper, but I have no problems shooting with this rig.

I did this because at the time, all I could afford was a Tasco scope. The Tasco turned out fine, and I haven't had to use the iron sights. Now, that rifle wears a Leupold, and the mounting is still fine.

All it will cost you is an extra set of rings, so if you're curious, I say to try it.

The scope that came on my 10/22 allows me to see under it, and use the irons. I'll have to adjust them though, not sure if it's the scope's fault, but with the cheek weld I get I think the irons shoot a bit high. (Again might not have anything to do with the scope)
